Help needed please.

I have a 1600 rally car with an L18 engine. I am applying to CAMS for a logbook. One piece of information required is the bore and stroke, and actual swept volume. I believe the latter is 1770 cc's, but have no idea of the bore and stroke. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Paul,

Are you sure it is still a stock L18? Most 1600 rally car engines are modified... My old 1600 rally car was a 1900cc L18 and most are around the 2L mark.

Also, what roll cage is in it? Have you got a copy of the latest CAMS manual? If you are trying to get the car log-booked now, it has to comply with the 2004 Roll Over Protection Specification (ROPS) and get a ROPS certificate from a CAMS Authorised Cage Builder...

L16 is 1695cc. Bore; 83.0mm x stroke; 73.7mm. I beleive the L18 is bored out only not stroked. If this is the case then the bore for 1770cc would have to be 81.8mm (according to my calculator)

for L18:
bore: 85mm
stroke: 78mm
swept volume: 1770.44cc

Thanks all for your help.

Yes Dazda have everything else sorted out. Has a new Brown Davis full cage with the necessary paper work.

Cheers

Paul,

If you are interested, my ex-rally car came with a copy of the FIA homologation papers with specs, etc for a 1600 SSS. (Only L16 motor though).

If you want a copy, PM me your postal address and I'll photocopy them and send them off to you. They look like they are a copy of a copy of a copy, etc and are a bit hard to read, but do have the CAMS stamp on them. Not sure how old they are, or how relevant to the regs they are now though.

Sorry Sean,

I should have made myself a little more clear. You are correct. As long as you build the cage to the 2004 specs (second diagonal in the main hoop and roof areas, and intrusion bars - I think these are the extra bars) and are prepared to sign off on it yourself (accept the responsibility that it was built to at least the minimum requirements) then you should be fine for state events and I think PRC ARC events as well.

At least that is my understanding of 'The badly worded book' (CAMS Manual)

Hey Sean,

Yes it is the car (PB210) I used to drive that is for sale again. It was never actually mine, I just drove it for the owner (at the time) for a while. I believe the current owner has decided to finish fixing their 180B rally car.

I think you can put the two diagonals on the rear legs but I don't have the 2004 manual with me at the moment so please don't take it as guaranteed.

I agree, 2 diagonals in the roof!!!!! It is hard enough fitting into some cars with a helmet on when the isn't a roll cage let alone two diagonals... RX-7s etc.
