Hey all, Does any one know what larger petrol tanks fit straight into a 1600??? I know it's a 60ltr tank and I have been told possibly a 200B may fit but I'm unsure. Could some one help!?

Cheers.

Theres a few threads on this mate, have a search. Mostly in regards to fabbing a new tank, but havent heard of other model tanks bolting straight in.

Get the tape measure out

A 180B sedan almost bolts in and gives 55ltrs storage, 10 up on a 1600.
You need to lightly trim the flared sides of the 180B tank where the top and
bottom sections of the tank join, to fit it between the towers. Be careful
not to cut inside the weld when trimming. For safety, dont use a grinder,
use a hacksaw or snips. As the 180 tank is deeper, you also need to
fabricate two small (25mm) blocks to mount the tank on and bolt through
these to the original mounts. The 180B fuel gauge sender plugs into the
1600 wiring loom and works correctly. The 180 fuel filler neck fits, and
will probably be in better condition than the 1600 one.

A 200B tank is built differently. The join between the top and bottom
halves is not horizontal. This makes mounting a bit more difficult, and
the filler neck is too high to fill from the original filling position. For
the extra 5 litres over a 180B tank its not worth the hassle, in my opinion.

I can get some measurements and a photo or two tomorrow from a spare tank. Stay tuned...

Thought i would post up some pictures of how i put an 180B fuel tank into my 1600 rally car. Last year during a couple of rallys i came really close to running out of fuel due to the long runs between services. So i started looking at maybe fabricating up a new one but then it came to my attention that you could fit in a 180b tank. This is a 55 litre tank up 10 litres on the 1600 one and is nice and low and baffled inside and heaps lighter that anything i could have made up.

i got a 180b tank of one of the members on here and remove the 1600 tank. now i don’t need to tell you that extreme caution is needed when doing and type of welding on a fuel tank you must clean and defume the tank before doing any cutting or grinding on or near the tank. That’s all i will say on this do this at your own risk or if in doubt don’t do it. For those that don’t get that i will put it like this, Fuel plus idiot = booooom.

First i removed the 1600 tank then in picture 1 then cut away the mounting flanges on the strut towers to clear the new tank.

The new tank needs to have the edges folded up on it so it will fit between the strut towers you could cut them off but i think its abit close to the seam in the tank so i folded them up with a shifting spanner. I run two fuel pumps in my car so on the 180b tank i cut off and soldered up the original outlet hole and drilled a hole and soldered into each side of the tank at the rear a new 8mm outlet pipe bend down inside the tank for maximum fuel pick up. picture 2

The fuel filler was abit short so i welded on a 60mm long extension so the old fill tube (one of the rubber one piece ones would reach to it and still be a good line picture 3

You have to redrill the mounting bolt holes and i did this after i had fitted in the tank but its no problem as they are close to the old ones and you can use the same bolts.

Picture 4,5,6 are of the installed tank. Its looks like it will work ok haven’t done a rally on it yet but a quick run round the block with 5 litres in the tank was ok .

So this worked for me and i hope it works for you
cheers for reading BC
