H190s seem to be relatively easy to find. The take off is no drama on the clutch at all, it's actually still pretty sprightly off idle. Remember how short the standard gearing is!

Looking at those external linkage gearboxes you posted a while ago... I can't see how they would work with this shifter mechanism. I'll pull the motor and box soon for a better look.

Awesome progress on the wAgon! Love it! Even though my wagon isnt a nissan this thread is very inspiring. Also dont overlook ford 8.8 if you want to go posi. They are standard on something like 90% of all rwd fords :) maybe a saginaw or muncie external linkage 4 speed would work?

The Hilux has some merit (plenty of LSDs, right stud pattern, 3.7 gears available, leaf spring mounts easy) but not sure on the disc brake setups.

I bought an N42 L28 a year and a half ago and put it in storage because I didn't have a spot to do much work on it at the time. When it came to get pulled out of storage at my mate's factory, it was pretty clear that the storage hadn't been very good and it was half full of water with plenty of damage.

Cleaned the cylinder head up, excessive corrosion on some of the coolant transfer ports, particularly the big one at the back.
[ img ]
To redemy the corroded big open transfer port/weak point in the head, I cleaned up the ratshit and made up this piece of ally that was an interference fit in the port, for welding by the head guy after the head was cleaned.
This obviously restricts that port to be quite a small orifice, changing the flow domination in the block and upping the pressure in the block by a small margin.

Exhaust valves were fine but some of the Inlets had corrosion on the margins so I replaced those 6. Along with the welding repairs, a light skim and general reco was done at M.R.C. Cylinder Heads.

Then the block was then bored and diamond-plateau honed to suit the new .040" hypereutectic pistons which I had fitted to the standard rods. Big end bearings were replaced, but the crank was mint so that remained untouched and I am re-using the main bearings too.

Popped the welsch plugs out and gave it a good clean before starting assembly.

Put the valvetrain gear back on and put the head on the block. Before I had the head reco'd I also drilled and tapped 5 holes above the exhaust ports to help with coolant flow. With my high capacity water pump, I expect to be able to run more bypass flow and this system will allow better thermal stability/consistency, and more detonation resistance under load.

Installed the head on the block, torqued it up and put a dial gauge & degree wheel on the cam to measure it up, seems very mild - 168deg@.050" and 7mm lift.

And that's where I'm up to so far.

Tiny update on the slowest project ever. Needed to set up an oil return for the turbo, had a little L-fitting but it was the wrong shape for this turbo exhaust manifold.

Aimed it to fit between two of the sump bolts:

Holesawed the sump and ground the off-the-shelf fitting to be flush on the angled installation

Looks awesome Heath. We'll have to catch up soon, I think you'll be reasonably impressed with a new purchase of mine and I still need to check out your workshop and have a look at your L28 capers.

Cranked the TIG out and stuffed around going over some factory welds on the engine mounts hahaha.

Installed the 'turbo' oil pump and dizzy shaft, bolted the pickup and sump on. Also decided Datsun engine blue was a little bland.

I don't know if that thing has the right spline count??? Almost got Jessie Streeter to bit on it, but wasn't 100% sure. Perhaps I should have still gone for it, you've kinda got me very tempted now.

This thread needs an update... coming soon haha

Post subject:  Re: Heath's 230 series 260C Wagon

haha, yea i was tempted but i will never have enough power in the wagon to need one.

Any news on the gearbox front?

I have purchased a 5 speed columm box from a z16 navara and robbed a 5 speed Z box from my bro in law and plan to swap the L front housing onto the z16 guts and rear half to get a 5 speed L columm change box. It appears that it will be a simple slap together as they run the same bearings and other bits a pieces.
the linkage might be a headache

No photos yet as im slack and havent done anything in ages. Move into our new house in 3 weeks so i will have some space to muck around then.
