hehe 510wgn, i remember when i had a SSS pulsar with an SR20DE...that fuel cut at 7,750!!! I've since bought a 2000 model 4cyl camry....i found out that it has a speed cut at around 188km/h, it drops the revs back by about 500rpm!!! i wonder how many camry owners out there have felt it (or care about it??)

Would be quite interesting to see a comparison between a L20B with a well-tuned EFI setup and appropriate cams and ignition and a SR20DE. I dare say there'd be not too much in it.

Every datsun owner has a small place in their heart for the L, even the people running later engines.

This L series would be a good match for an SR :

well i guess i should put in my thoghts on the subject as well. guess i"m lucky' my daily driver is a 1600 with a fairly modded l20b that i"ve spanked the arse out of for a good 4 years and it keeps coming back for more(touch wood)& i"m 90% through an fj conversion. been for a fang in one with an fj b 4 & was suitably impressed. Still thinking of doin a rebuild of my daily drver when the fj"s done &goin the mighty l series again.Happy motoring people 8)

Yeah man, the old Primera cuts at just over 180km/h too, doesn't drop the revs like that though! Just fuel cuts and lets out this mean bark - can hold it there at the speed, doesn't do the big drop like the Camry. Gives out a mean noise through the intake when it does it.

Yeah I'd be keen to compare the two engines aye! Have full respect for the old L series, was going to go along the L20B road with my wagon, but that was when it was going to be a daily driven beast. Plans fully changed there now!

I've seen that a standard SR20DE puts out about 150hp, around 110Kw. Dunno what mine is putting out now but it will see a dyno one day just for interests sake.

My favourite would have to be the FJ..... For racing purposes, the things are virtually bullet proof, make great power and are easy to rebuild. The only down side is the little bit of extra weight, but you learn to live with it :)

I have an FJ20et in my 72 1600 which is currently being rebuilt as a race car. Was converted over using a stock FJ with std computer over 5 years ago now and was my everday car doing 40,000ks+ for three years. I recently bought a 68 1600 that had an L20 with twin 40's to do as a SSS mockup. My brother has an SR20det 71 1600.
The FJ is a great engine. Would happily pull to 8k rpm all day every day and sounded awesome with a 3" mandrel exhaust with a single truck resinator. I would rate it as strong as an L series too. The only let down was the factory efi. Once it's back on the road/track the Autronics will fix that.
I had forgotten how much fun an L series 1600 was till I got the 68. Not waiting for boost is a good thing on the street and you can have a lot of fun without hitting stupid speeds every time you plant it. I have just put another L20 in that should make 190+fwhp once fully sorted. A big hit of NOS should increase the fun factor but at the end of the bay NOS and boost would be even better.
My brothers S14 SR20det was bought with 22,000 k's on it. It is a very smooth engine with great NVH levels and makes very good hp with a large front mount and a 3" mandrel exhaust. They are much smoother than the FJ or L and with a boost bleed are a lot of fun. However I think they lack the factory strength of the L and FJ.
I have had one CA18det in an S12 Silvia. Was a good fun car but I only had it for a few months and it was a bit tired. Can't really comment on the strength but it was fairly smooth if a bit gutless.
The FJ's my favourite and my choice for competition cars looking for big hp. The L series is great but needs a big cam, ports, and valves to match the hp a relatively std NA SR with aftermarket efi would make. The main reaon for sticking with the L in the 68 is the SSS bit going into it. I am very tempted to chuck an autronics on it though.

Long live the L20b, turbo of course, luv the FJ they pull like a tractor. SR's good sewing machine motors, seriously, I have one of each and they all serve there purposes well. So no I can't add much input on the subject.

i started with the L20 in a 1600. made 110rwkw and was given hell it whole life. they is no other car out they that has the spine tinkleing sound of a L with twin 45s

now i have a SR in place, it got some big balls and it fast a hell. it starts frist time every time, idles like a baby, and makes power with out need to ring its neck.

i also have a DR30 with a FJ. everyone goes on about how bulletproof they are. well i must of got a bad one as it bent 2 valve the other day. but before the it was great. light switch power delivery, turbo lag, and a tonne of power.

but in the end its hard to say which i like best as i love them all. so i am buying a third datsun to put the old L20 back in and then i will have some fun.

robert
