Anyone installed Gas Bonnet Struts?

I've picked up a set like the ones the guy on ebay was selling but just looking for confirmation on where to drill.

I can work it out myself, but would be good to see how others have done them. They are for a 510.

Hey mate,

it says in the ebay add that they come with instructions. Have you tried to contact him?

Cheers,

Trent

I think that might be a bit cheeky

I bought some from a seller on Ebay and they did indeed come with instructions.
If you ask me nicely I'll send you a copy/scan

OK well the instructions that came with the gas struts were wrapped around the struts and is too poor to scan but here is a translation: -

Bonnet strut.jpg [ 18.56 KiB | Viewed 5171 times ]
The struts I purchased are 195mm stud to stud fully extended, body length 130mm, piston length 88mm.

HINGE.
Drill a 5/16[8mm] hole 25mm from the back edge of the hinge and down 25mm from the top of the hinge.

INNER GUARD.
Drill a 5/16[8mm] hole 40mm back from the strut tower and 40mm down from the top edge of the inner guard where the mudguard bolts on.

Just for the record here is the instruction sheet that came with the struts: -

They wouldn't have a NM force printed on the struts by chance would they?
Cheers

How high does it put your bonnet Graeme? Same height as the original latch?

Have you got a pic of your car with one installed? That pic of the brown car you posted looks to be longer than the ones in the pic.

They're a project that is in the queue
I take your point though, I'll see where the bonnet sits when the strut is in the recommended position before I drill anything
The brown 510 is a pic. I lifted from eBay some time ago, not associated with the struts I purchased.
I don't know what their compressed length is yet, that will also dictate the mounting points.

No worries Graeme. I took a cardboard template off my 180b to work out the bonnet angle and assuming it would be similar on a 1600.

I'm finishing off a mini rebuild on my dads car, so the bonnet is off and not where the car is at the moment otherwise I would have reported back on angle etc.

Anyway, I measured up the hole in the hinge and if you go down 25mm, then across 25mm from the back of the hinge it puts the hole right near the edge of the hinge.

So I moved changed it to 20mm after doing some checks. Now I may have stuffed it just slightly as when the hinge is right down it just touches the front bolt that holds the hinge on.

Other than that it fits fine at that end. For the other end I put my hole above the hole in the inner guard, but towards the strut tower (probably hard to understand).

Anyway, I'm not doing the other one til I can test fit the bonnet, but will report back once I have. Not to worried, can always weld up the hole in the hinge if needed.

I have been building a Hydro bath and blow dryers for my daughter.
She's starting up a Dog Grooming Studio at home.
Let me know if you need me to build some for you
