Hey Ozdat,

Starting this thread as I am finally back with a Datsun. As a post I read earlier said there are a lot of distractions that keep you from owning a datsun but eventually you get one again :)

This is me, circa 1994, with my first car a 1979 Datsun Stanza.

[ img ]

It came home on a trailer as the camshaft had snapped in two due to poor head machining. Over the next year or so Dad and I got it back to metal and rebuilt it with a L20B, 180B SSS head, pace maker extractors and twin SU's, Stanza SSS dogleg 5 speed, SSS dash with tacho and lowered king springs all round. If I can find more pics I'll add them up.

Fast forward 17 years and I have bought my second Stanza. It's 1980 (edit. its an 80 according to the build plate) model with a good body that has been repaired recently and a L20B and four speed.

Bought off an Ozdat member from the forums it was driven home on Saturday and went for RWC today. Needs a bit of work so if anyone knows where to get:
  • Front discs (repco had only one in Aus for only $22 hehe)
    Cheap shocks
    78-79 rear bumper
    Indicator stalk
Side mirror (no rwc with fender mirrors boo)
Heaters not connect so whatever parts are needed for that
Towbar to tow a couple of bikes back to Canberra. Not really a RWC issue but sort of need it...
Short term plans are to get it registered and cruise around for a while. Longer term plans are SR20DET conversion with Hilux diff. Pretty sure I'm moving back to Canberra later this year and will have access to a garage so it will be a matter of getting the parts together, get a cheap runabout and then take this one off the road.

I read lots of good info on here already from a pretty friendly bunch so I look forward to asking questions and helping where I can :)

cheers

Well RWC wasnt without its suprises but that being said it could be worse. Glass half full and all.

List that needs attentions is as follows:
  • No rear bumper bar
    Washer jets not working
    No reverse lights
    R/H Stop light not working
    No number plate lights
L/H wiper arm needs to be re-aligned
    Indicator auto cancel doesn't
Reat seat needs to be secured
    Drivers seat belt is twisted
Windscreen has too many chips bro
    Rear Shocks are stuffed
L/H rear tyre is no good
    Front caster bushes broken
    Sway bay link bushes broken
    Front brake pads no good
    Front discs undersize
    Heater not connected
    Spare Tyre Flat
Needs a drivers side door mirror
    No windows winders
Ordered some shocks of eBay to replace the existing ones. Took the front drivers wheel off tonight to sus the brakes and they are as the pics below.

[ img ]

Nicely grooved discs with girlock calipers.

[ img ]

Pads seem cheap and abundant enough but rotors appear to be hard to find. I have emailed DBA tonight for some replacements that are out of stock special order etc. Do other rotors bolt up? I have a manual on the way from eBay so that might have some answers.

Took a look at the heater not hooked up and as per the pic below its not hooked up!

[ img ]

The heater tap is stuck and the heater tap has been bypassed so it runs back to the radiator. All the hoses are there, just need a new tap.

Some progress. Most parts en route, ETA Thursday next week. Will be seeing the tyre man about a slow leak in the other car + two new 13's on Sat morning. The heater core and tap came travelling with me this weekend around to wrecking yards chasing another but to no avail. I will be calling Nissan Brighton tomorrow to see if they can help. Failing that nfi. After market 12v electic? 12v hairdryers? dunno.

Got a nice shipment in the mail during the week and also picked up new front discs so I got a fair bit done yesterday. In the mail came a towbar, rear bumper, drivers mirror, indicator stalk (no good since its form a 78-79 and is different) and some interior and exterior trim bits. Got two new tires and a leak plugged in the sparsie so that's sorted. Heater core is being re-cored and I'm picking that up Monday and the heater tap is NOS from Brighton Nissan which will rock up late this week or early next week. I plan on having all but heater tap and windscreen sorted by mid this week so only need to drop the coolant and hook up the heater properly and then its ready for RWC round two.

Revised List:
  • Washer jets not working
    No number plate lights
L/H wiper arm needs to be re-aligned
    Indicator auto cancel doesn't
Reat seat needs to be secured

Windscreen has too many chips bro
    Heater not connected
Needs a drivers side door mirror
Done:
  • R/H Stop light not working
    Rear Shocks are stuffed
    No windows winders

Hey hey,

Are those 79 stanza bumpers?
Did they bolt straight on or did you have to customize the mounts etc?

Yo,

Yep, early model bumpers. Front was on already so not 100% on it but rear bolted up no probs. Dont have the rear bumper ends/sides bolted up but the holes in the rear bumper line up with the holes in the rear quarter

Nice work mate! I'm doing the same thing with the early 78-79 bumpers for my track car, i think they look heaps better. Great to see another Stanza getting back on the road.

There's 2 poles on the back of the steering wheel, usually referred to as the 'boss'. These are what cancels the indicators. You may find that these poles are broke, hence why it won't flick the indicators off.

One pole will cancel the indicators when you unwind the steering wheel one way, and the other one cancels it turning the other way. You'l see what I mean when the steering wheel is turned off (I hope).

I know what it's like with the swaybar, my basher one stuffed it's bushes and all that garbage too, and it wasn't bolted on for a while, I had to get the bolts and stuff from my Bluebird when I replaced that one with an R31 one.

Good luck with the RWC, I love Stanzas and they are good fun to drive.

Lugs on the back of the steering wheel are fine. I think my issue has to do with the crack in the assembly:

Araldite and clamps should have it sorted.

new heater core:

Got the it back in the heater box thing, back in the car on Wed and put the controls back in today. Fan works flat out or not at all which i can live with if it passes rego.

I have a question about how the heater is hosed up - At the moment it goes from the back of the head to the inlet of the radiator bypassing the cabin altogether. I assume I need a T-piece after the outlet on the back of the head to run the water to the heater and back to the radiator inlet? so if the heater valve in the cabin is closed, the water wont flow and it will go back to the T-piece. If anyone has a pic of their setup i would very much appreciate a look-see or someone knows what I need (t-piece, hose?) that would be super sweet.

Revised List:

Washer jets not working
No number plate lights
Indicator auto cancel doesn't
Drivers seat belt is twisted
Windscreen has too many chips bro
Heater not connected
Needs a drivers side door mirror

Done:

Rear Shocks are stuffed
No windows winders
Front caster bushes broken
Sway bay link bushes broken
Spare Tyre Flat
No rear bumper bar
No reverse lights
L/H rear tyre is no good
Front brake pads no good
Front discs undersize

Got some more done tonight. Rear plate lights work, high beams and parks work but now the headlights don't work ffs. Pretty sure they were working as i was testing the rear plate lights. Looks light the rear plate lights earth the circuit?

Brake light was on constantly on my little cruise around the carpark and due to no lights i didnt leave the carpark for some faster driving to see if that would sort it. Brighton Nissan called today too and they have the heater tap so will pick that up. Should be ready for RWC round two next week pending these couple of issues and the revised list.

How dont the washer jets work? Might just need new hoses

Author:  2ndTimeStanza [ Thu Apr 14, 2011 12:38 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: 1980 Datsun Stanza

yeah the hose is not connected to the washer bottle at the moment. I haven't tried power to it to see if it will pump, nor tested if there are any blockages but I definitely need some new hose.

Does that look right? I need two t-pieces to to plumb the heater back into the cooling system i think...

Hey, I also had troubles with my headlights not working at one point. I'm gonna be up with the Stanza in a few days time, so i'll show you (with pictures) which wire broke and stopped the lights from working.

I'll attempt to describe it though (you may not have the same problem):

There's a plug near the battery? It's got 6 wires coming from each end. One of the wires carries the power to the headlights. I had that wire rust away, so I had to re-solder a new wire to the plug.

I'll chuck up a picture if I remember, it may not be the same problem, but it does sound rather similar, and it may stop you from chasing wires around everywhere.

I'll also take a look at the heater hoses if I remember too.

Keep up the good work man.

So third round of RWC is tomorrow. Last Thursday it went in again but they didnt seem to check any of the fixed items even though they had the 1st RWC report. That being said they have ordered a screen and it will be in tomorrow. I have completed the list apart from the windscreen with the heater plumbed back in - back of head t-piece to heater and then the heater outlet back in near the water pump. this isnt the main water passage as I though so this was easy.

replacement part Vs rusted out original:

[ img ]

Also went to Imlachs on Centre road today looking for a indicator/washer assembly. No stanzas but I pulled the same one from a datsun 1200 (120y ones were already broken) but it was cracked like mine and didnt seem too good. R31's are newer as are N13 pulsars but N12/Exas? Perfect. Got a good one out of a N12 pulsar and a smaller steering wheel from the 1200 and headed home. Lights now work and indicator auto cancels. Used the housing from the N12 and the indicator stalk from the stanza as the N12 turned out to be broken and would turn the high beams on or nothing.

3rd inspection - 2nd list of things to fix. Make sense? Me neither. Mechanic has two workshops. 1st inspection done by them, this one by their other place.

1. No carpets fitted - Wring and hand brake cable exposed
2. Alternator belt cracked
3. LHF park-indicator lens cracked
4. LHR seatbelt broken
5. Front tyres cracked with age
6. Minor free play in front wheel bearings
7. RR wheel cylinder leaking brake fluid
8. Sharp brackets at centre console
9. Tear in front seat

Not being from Melb originally I love the convenience of hitting up google for what you need and being able to walk there to get it. Working out of the city ATM so picked an auto mechanic close by work to get the RWC done. When I go back in a week and a bits time (pending parts ffs) to get it signed off (i **** hope) thats the 4th time ive been there. Might need a bit more prudence in selecting services in the future. I tell myself its free parking when they have it for the day but the UVP costs are adding up now **** lol.
