Bumper Field for Rally Bonnie Doon
[ 20 Mar 2011 ] - in General news
The 5th North Eastern Car Club Rally Bonnie Doon is set for another bumper event on Saturday 26th March 2011. With 58 entries received the attraction to the event continues. Some major changes have taken place in 2011 with the event no longer being a round of the Victorian Club Rally Series and moving to a Pace Noted format.

Australian Rally Championship contenders Eli Evans & Glen Weston in their factory backed Honda Integra Type R will head the field as Car 1, but Evans is not expected to have it all his own way with many of Victorias leading crews keen to push the rising star.

Many of the states Hyundai Excel Rally Series contenders are also competing as a pre seasons shakedown before their first round in May. As well as the new cars, many classic Escorts and Datsun 1600’s will be out to prove that new is not always best.

Spectating is free and a guide can be downloaded from vicrally.com.au by clicking on the Calender tab, and then following the link to Rally Bonnie Doon, or by picking one up from the Bonnie Doon Hotel on the day.

The first car is due to leave the Bonnie Doon Hotel car park at 9am and finish at approximately 3pm.

I navigated at this event, sorry not in a Datsun - Car 49, an Excell. This is my 3rd year navigating in this event, and the first time I have finished without a broken gearbox - the last two times I was in an Escort Mk2, and the Quaife gear box just wouldn't take it!
This year was pace noted and it definately makes the section times quicker. Datto's did well considering there were cars using the event as a warm up for the ARC and the VRC.
Check out the youtube postings

Had a look at these youtube posts of the spectator point by "rallycommodude"?

You will love the performance of most of the Datto drivers in parts 1 and 2 videos. Listen for car 42 on part 2. Glen Bakker and Phil Rainier, in Glen's beautiful Datsun 1600 built by Les Collins (Datrally founder). The camera guy just points the camera at the bush to soak up the sounds well before the car bursts into view, and well after it disappears.

In part 1 Car1 Eli Evans (Honda Civic? type R), and Car 9 Grant Walker's Mk2 Escort with a Cosworth twin cam doesn't sound too bad either. The Datto drivers all do a great job of the TVHR turn. Watch the 4wd turbo cars get the power to the road, shows how good the 2wd drivers are to stay in
contention.
