Practise Day was great. Brabham circuit. The coupe performed nicely and I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of the track a bit now. Massive learning curve! I started putting down 2.48's and ended up with 2.37's and you gotta be happy with that. The 22mm rear bar and the wide rears are causing the car to understeer, only on extreme manouvers, so it's predictable. There's alot more in it if I grow bigger ones! The diff bearings are 42 years old and are sounding like it. Apart from the centre needing some work now, the car is running great. Lovin it! December 6 is the next practise day! I should have the car ready for that. Can't wait. |

Great stuff Mark. Any videos? Watch out for oil starvation in the diff! Mine was admittedly low when I got it, but after some thrashing through the hills, it was quite apparent that the housing was condusive to grabbing all the oil and shoving it down an axle tube. |

Haha, videos, yeah I'm feeling the need for a gopro or something. I'm looking into that. It's funny you mention oil starvation Heath. I was talking to a guy at the track who's a mechanic and he's mentioned a similar problem that he was getting in his Ford. His fix was to add an extra litre of diff oil into the housing. How did he do it? He jacked up the car heaps on one side and filled the bastard up. The vent or breather needs to be working properly, though! |

That's the second thing I was going to suggest, and the method was the same! Also, big MOLY content in your oil, or friction modifiers. An engineered solution to the problem is baffles on the inner ends of the axle tubes to restrict the lateral flow of the oil. Exhibit A: |

I sat and looked hard at that housing. My immediate thoughts were...'Excellent idea' A few concerns though. 1)Filling the diff up with oil would mean that your full level should be higher than the bottom edge of that baffle. As i see it, as you cornered, an empty tube would fill with oil that should stay with the centre. 2)oil that goes in there stays in there and will mix with clean oil at next diff oil change. Crud may also accumulate in there over time. 3)pulling out an axle will be a messy affair. I'm not dissing the idea but wanted to know what you think about this versus just whacking in more oil...say 50% more for safety's sake? |

nissan, nismo & other nissan race teams have been doing this way for many years |

Note: You don't want it fully sealed, you want small holes near the bottom which will address all of the above issues. |

You could seal it, bearings are sealed units at the outer end of the axles IIRC. It would be like the R180/200's in principle, no? You don't need any oil to run down the tubes at all, do you???Am I missing something? A diff breather could be taped into the top of the diff housing for venting. |

You should already have a diff breather, and the rear wheel bearings on any semi-floater are unsealed - the fill level is such that there is a little bit of oil down the axle tubes, even when driving in a straight line for prolonged periods of time. |

These old cars are not real light but with this sort of power, they do move along nicely and sound great! |
