G'day, my name is Marty. I live on the Brisbane northside. I had another 1600 once before, bought it smashed in 1997. Put a new front on it and drove it for 4 years or so. Had an L16, then L18, then Z18. Sold it in 2003. Have often thought about getting another 1600 but been busy having kids, renovating a house, the usual stuff a guy does in his 30s! Anyway, this popped up in a yard around the corner from me. It sat since 2008 when the old fella who owned it from new died. Family parked it up and didn't know what to do with it. I rocked up and put a deposit on it, bought it home on Sunday. Is now tucked up next to my RX2 in the shed. Looks good in the pic but has rust in all the usual spots. It runs, still has the original engine and auto. I won't write any more but will take more pics and put them up soon. Will be a long build this one, still unsure which way to go but more than likely will be L powered and fairly original. Hope you guys like it, cheers.

Looks good. Did you use the axe on the ground to remove the battery :giggle:

Nah, to get the brake drums off mate. Rear wheel was dragging the whole way home. Here's a few more pics. There's going to be a lot of work getting the old girl cleaned up. Had a closer look at it over the last couple of days. It's funny what you notice once you get a car home. There aren't many bits on the car that won't require attention. Almost every piece of stainless trim on the car has a dent. The previous owner of the car had the rego etched into all of the glass, will probably just live with it but it will annoy me. The door hinges have dropped. Both bumpers have minor dents. Interior light it missing its lense. Left guard may be beyond repairing. The good points about the car I would say are the sills which have very little if any rust, the floor seems good apart from drivers side surface rust, the boot floor is very good, the car is reasonably straight. What can you expect for a 42 year old car?

Looks great to me.Doesn't look like there is anything that can't be fixed there mate. That boot rust is pretty easy to do around the top channels etc. All of it is really if you got any skill and patience with a welder.
Should be good fun getting the rust repairs done and a new lick of off-white!

That rust around the boot was the same as mine. Good time to start practice welding. I wasn't game to tackle those bits though.

Good luck with it mate.

Cheers,

Trent

I know Marty pretty well. I use to work with him when I was living in Brisbane. I am sure he has the skill and patience to give this piece of history the love and care it deserves. Never know I may end up back in Brisbane with the way our industry is heading. We can share our Datsun love together ! All the best mate.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I was looking through heaps of old pics today of my last car. So many good memories. I'll scan a few up some time. Maybe she's still getting around Melbourne.

Here's a pic of my other car from the recent Classic Jap Show. I've had it since 2004 and it was in similar condition to the 1600 when I got it. It's still running an original twin dizzy 12A but with a small bridgeport. There's a buid thread on Ausrotary somewhere.

Been a while since I updated this thread, not too much work has been done on the car itself but a few parts have been sourced. A mate of mine sold me a 2002 WRX diff so I'm half way through converting the stub shafts to suit the Datto driveshafts. This car won't be a powerhouse any time soon so I thought why not. Picked up an immaculate front LH guard off a mate, was hanging on a shed wall for 25 years. The the other week another guy I know asked me if I wanted this honey brown 1600 for parts. Was his brother in laws, had big plans which never eventuated. His parents wanted it out of their shed where it had sat for 10 years. Some good parts on this one including a factory tacho dash, all of the manual bits to convert mine, good doors etc. I am going to unpick the A and B pillars out of this car as they are better than the ones in the white car. Also the top of the LH quarter is fairly good and will get welded into the white car. The RH sill is very good on this car too. It is getting the sabre saw on Thursday. In other news I will be picking up a Stanza box this week. Hopefully have it all converted to manual and driving with the WRX diff over the next couple of months. So far the car owes me around $1500, still need to do brakes, suspension, rims and rubber. The look I'm going for will be fairly ratty and dumped low on 15x8s. Only bodywork that will be done will be to keep the car legal. L16 will remain probably with SUs. Have some R31 struts so may use these with coilovers but thats another day. Will get up pics of white car soon.

Here's a link to my RX2 build all those years ago, one day I will get busy and do a bit more on her but that will be after the Datto is on the road. I was living in Melbourne when I built this car up, drove it up to Brisbane in 2007 and been living up here ever since. Car hasn't changed at all, is very reliable.

Drove the RX2 on a 5 hour drive to Dalby and back earlier in the year, here we are stopping for a quiet one on the drive back. I'm a firm believer in getting out and driving my old cars anywhere I would take a new one.
