Hey guys sorry for posting this If it has been asked before, I was just wondering what to do about dim headlights, also my dash lights are getting more dim every time I drive at night :S My battery is fine as far as i know.

As for the headlights, should i just get higher wattage globes? I'm unsure of how to go about the dim dash lights, same thing or?

Thanks for any help

If the problem is getting progressively worse, then you need to do some voltage measurements.
Start at the relevant fuses.
Check the condition of them for loose terminals, corrosion etc.
Measure the voltage each side of the fuse[s] with the lights on.
If there is a voltage drop over the fuse, replace it and re-check.
Measure the voltage supply to the headlamps.
Once again check the integrity of the wiring connections.
Also check the GROUND circuit for the lights, it is just as important as the 12V supply.
The dash lights share the same supply and fuse as the tail lights.
Do you have a trailer plug?
Make sure that is undamaged and the wiring is not shorting to anything
There is no need to increase the headlamp wattage to compensate for another fault.

As you are a first year mechanic I have some advise for you.
Never forget these words when you are trouble shooting problems.

GO BACK TO BASICS.

Have you cleaned the battery terminals?
Checked the main pos cable to the starter & cleaned the connections?
Checked the main earth cable & body earth?
The alternator terminal?
fan belt tension?

cheers.

cheers baz, to be honest with you I do a science diploma 3 days a week and only work 2. Gave up on the apprenticeship as i just wanted to learn how to work on my own car at the shop, I've done alot but trouble shooting is not something I've learnt much of unfortunately, so the tips are heaps appreciated. ill give all that a go in the morning :)

to be honest the headlights have always been pretty dim in my 200b lol, i assumed it was normal

when i got the pathfinder its high beams where much better, though the engine is a glorified 2.4 litre L series, and then i added 9 inch H9 globe spotlights, super high beam. yeah. now lets put those z18et bits onto you and get a big cam from the states. phwooaaaarr

I'd suggest running a big fat wore from the B+ terminal on the alternator to the positive terminal on the battery. You can measure the length and then get it cut and have the terminals fitted at any decent car accessories store. Doing this made an enormous difference on my 200B The factory wire is tiny!

I think Alistair means wire or at least i hope. I did an upgrade to semi sealed beams from auto barn as mine where very weak. It made a pretty big difference and cost well under $100. Even if you have another issue i still think this is a very worthwhile upgrade.

Yeah, I meant wire  give me a break, it was early in the morning! If you do end up with a big fat 'wore', don't let it near your car.

My bad I completely forgot about the thread, I got around to changing the wire like you said green200b which made a big difference, then i put new semi sealed beams and they've been perfect since.
Thanks fellas
