has anyone had their 1600 wiper motor chromed? do you have to dismantle the entire assembly before sending to chromers?

any info or useful tips would be appreciated!

I have a useful tip, don't take the wiper motor apart, it's a right **** to put back together! It has three little spring loaded brushes that push up against the main drive shaft of the motor, you have to hold them back somehow when you put the assembly back together otherwise they just fly out due to the springs, then the outer casing shell wants to stick to the everything magnetically when you slide it back on again (while trying to hold the brushes back). Basically it's a clusterfuck, never again!

and knowing my luck, I just found an article on rebuilding the 1600 wiper motor with a simple trick on keeping the brushes from springing out

Good one Anth. I pulled my one apart and the brushes turned to dust. Its been sitting in pieces for the past 6 months. Now off to buy some brushes and rebuild it!

Cheers,

Trent

Dan
You have top pull it apart no a big job and why its apart put a new set off brushes in it
Make sure you get all the bolts chromed too
If you get stuck ,stick it in the post and i will get it done for you
But it is a bit off a job to get the bushes back in
If not send it all pulled apart to a auto elecko and they will rebuild it and put it back together for no less then $80

Will look heaps neater same colour as your car. I was looking into this myself and after going to a few car shows noticed they all had the wiper motors painted same as the car. Guess it makes them blend into the background so to speak.

yeah exactly, not the best looking motor. plus i wanna do something different with the wiring too. not have it running along the firewall and not having the plug sticking out infront of the motor like the 1600 one.

What is this Mazda wiper conversion? My wiper is slow then picks up speed after a few minutes. I was considering rebuilding mine. If I can replace it with a better motor I would consider that too.

Make sure all the linkage joints are well lubricated
as these can stiffen up and cause slowness and then it
may cause your wiper motor to short as mine did recently.

...and pivots. Done this recently and replaced the rubber boots on the pivots too.

As a side note, why not make a polished stainless cover for the wiper motor?
