Without knowing anything about 1600s or those autos etc, you should just be able to connect the wire to earth, right?

But I would definitely aim to swap that auto for a manual to fix the real problem :P

You can bypass the contacts of the switch to TEMPORARILY avoid the fault.
The START wires to the starter solenoid are routed via the Inhibitor switch.
You need to bridge them out at the Inhibitor switch: -

Just bridge the two BY [Black/Yellow tracer] wires together and the starter should operate regardless of the Inhibitor switch.
You must appreciate the danger of doing this so get a new Inhibitor switch as a matter of urgency :tsktsk:

The other two wires are for the kick down solenoid operation.
When the Ignition switch is in the START position, you need to check for 12V at the Inhibitor switch.
Once the two wires are bridged together the 12V start signal should then be extended to the starter solenoid.
Check for 12V there also.
If you don't get voltage check your fuses.
If you do get voltage, check the starter connections.
You should at least hear the starter solenoid "CLICK" when the Ignition switch is in START.

When I did an auto to manual conversion in my old 1600 I used this as a security cut-out switch. Just bridged the wires and when parked somewhere I could remove the bridge and the car would not start. Worked a treat.

I hooked up a 30 amp single contact relay too 85-earth , 86-black/yellow wire from inhibitor switch too starter solenoid (disconnected from solenoid connected to relay) , 30- starter soliod were battery leaf connects too, 87- starter solenoid were the black/yellow wire connected to normally. And still no fire up. When I have all this not hooked up I can pull the black /yellow wire off the starter solenoid and get a screw driver and start her by touching the 2 terminals together no worried
