Hey guys,
New to the datsun world as of about a month ago!
And new to the site so take it easy on me!
Whilst searching through some classifieds came across a 1975 datsun 180b.
Auto, everything standard, vinyl roof (which is old and crusty) and complimentary rust was thrown in.
For it's age she wasn't in too bad of condition and the rust isn't crazy.. Sills, around tail lights, bottom of doors and bonnet.
I have decided that I want to keep the l18 that's in it and just give it sone balls and keep it clean!
So far I have bought and rebuilt some twin su carbies, removed half the interior and purchased a bonnet and front left guard as they were irreparable!

Will be needing help along the way as this is uncharted waters for me!

Cheers!!

sorry photos are backwards

just a couple of extra photos...
rebuilt the twin su's i bought.
they were full of hornets nests.. instead of searching for an orginial filter box i opted for redline filters
and for the choke linkages i made up a steel tube to run between the two so i could use the original single choke cable.
all new hoses, made up new gaskets, new oils and should be at a fire up stage
pretty happy with how it came up

Looks like a good good start to the rebuild. Let us know how it runs when you fire it up.
Cheers.

Hey guys,
Been working my way through ok'd topics on l18 mods instead of posting my own.. Aaaand seems to be a general consensus of mild cam, extractors, some head work!
Saw a couple with different heads.. A87? I think?
Can anyone recommend a decent option and a better idea on mods.. Just getting mixed messages from all the different topic posts..

Cheers

A87 is a good head, if you can find one or if it already has one use that, get The SU Manifold and head match ported (some use their manifold gasket as a guide). mild cam, extractors and 2inch exhaust. Thats cheap easy stuff. How much do you want to spend?

I would be careful with cam upgrades when using su's. I would just put an SSS or l20b cam in.

Old-tin Yeh I saw the l20b cam was a popular choice.. How do I identify the difference? If I was looking for one?

Travm182 I will be spending a bit on it.. Want to keep it looking fairly original but with a fair bit more punch! Was looking at pacemaker extractors yesterday but noone can tell me if they will fit with the su's... Exhaust shop said they could custom make some for $440 but I can get brand new pacemakers for $289

And how do I identify the head? I know it's the original..

Cheers

Below number 1 spark plug it will say "Nissan" and "A87, W53, U67" or another 3 digit thing, this identifies what head you have.

I will give him a yell!!

Did a quick test fit of the su's today.. And the heat shroud seemed to male things extremely tight! Is it needed or if I just heat wrap the exhaust will it be sweet?
Also there is a a hose coming off the side of the block in-between the exhaust... What's it for? (obviously I lack in the mechanical side of things haha but I'll get there)

Did you rebuild the carbs yourself, or did you get someone else to do it for you?

I'm going to overhaul a pair I have, so I'm interested where you got the parts from. Did you get a kit, did you have to scrounge around part matching....

They look sweet btw, I want mine to look nice and new like those peauties :D

610citylimits I rebuilt them myself.. Took 3 weeks as it was first attempt haha filters were easy just went to redline.. And I was lucky enough that the needles were all good! Made a couple of gaskets myself. As for parts it didn't need much at all.. Got them on the cheap and just worked out well.. Needed to new tension spring, new hoses and a damn good clean!!

I read up about them alot first though through http://www.jetlink.net/~okayfine/sutech.html and also through the forums!

Old-tin appreciate it!!! Hoping to kick it over tomorrow

The L20b cam has a C marked on it,it is also the exact same camshaft that a SSS l18 uses. personaly i think a reground cam is a cheap reliable performance upgrade.the other thing you can do cheap and still keep reliability is tracking down a series 3 nissan bluebird distributor. obviously do all your filters, then if you want to get seriouse, track down a 5spd g-box (no mods needed(provided you dont get the dogleg(from a stanza))) haha(haha) even then its just a tailshaft shortening.

good luck :D
