Ive been trying to find a way to get quicker steering on my 1600 using the factory steering box. To the best of my knowledge theres no quick box available ever but i stumbled accross a gadget called a steering quickener.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these a quick search shows that they work well but steering effort goes up.

If you have a collapsible column, The later 180B box will fit, if regs allow.
this will give close to 2.47 turns lock to lock, vs 3.2 with 1600 box.
With 1600 box approx 2.14, which is way too hard, even with a 15" wheel.

Jamie Waterhouse mech. repairs in Penrith does an electric power steering conversion for Dattos, if that helps.

You could also shorten the steering arms, although it may be easy to mess up the some of the steering properties.
I could have heard of this approach allegedly happening quite a few times before
Theoretically there'd be some serious engineering and testing work to be done for any road use

Mostly OK, needs typical rust and panel work.

I don't follow :?: This would make it impossible to get the wheel alignment correct I would think

steering arms are under your struts,he wasnt talking tie rod ends. Shortening these arms is like shortening a gear stick.takes less throw to push it all the way. this way could result in bad bump steer.

The 180b steering box is the go like baz said.if you dont have the collapsible colum,Get one

I had forgotten about the 180b swap .This has given me a idea,My project 69 has a notchy steering box and i have a 180b soon to be squashed.I know what i will be doin next on the datto :)

Ok thanks best option get another steering box. I already have collapsable column so a 180b box it is as im not touching the steering arms this method raises other issues.

The steering quickener is still a cool gadget

thanks

The ratio of the 180B box will only be better than the 1600 unit, if the steering quickener is used.

std the 3 bolt 180B is the same as the 1600 3.2 turns.
The four bolt 180B is 3.7 turns.
with the quickener the 4 bolt box will be approx 2.47 turns.

The 3.2 box will be 2.14 turns with the quickener.
I did not fully make it clear enough in my first post.

without the quickener the 3.2 box is the go.

Its a bit of a side topic in this thread but thought I would add this.

my 1600 steering box (non collapsible 1970) is 3.7 turns.

I got a 3 bolt 180b box to get the collapsible column also and it had 3.7 turns also.

depends on the lock stop & control arm length. I can assure you that the three bolt boxes have a higher ratio than the four bolt.

Not that it helps you or that you can find them, but I have a 4 bolt steering box in my 1600 that is just over 2 turns lock to lock. I know of 3 of thee in existence and believe they were from early Datrally or Nismo parts that were once available.
