Besides paint stripper what are the correct/best attachment for a grinder etc to use to strip paint ? Cheers

Messy and highly dangerous to your lungs but very effective is the 3M Clean'n'Strip wheel.

I use a big diam. sucker on a variable speed angle polisher.
Keep the wheel moving, don't press too hard, keep the revs below the recommended max. and away you go!
The wheel can generate a lot of heat in the panel so the above is important.
Use the appropriate safety gear and vacuum up the dust.
Not much good for corners and crevices but Auto Paint Stripper will get in there OK.

Oh yea I know the ones I've used the like ones on a air tool, I've also got one of those large polisher/sanders what are the large disks worth? And do they last awhile?

Haven't bought one for a while.
They do wear fairly quickly but if you take your time, press gently and don't overload the disc you will get the job done.
Depending on the size of the job you might need more than one.
They are good though, they will get the panel back to shiny metal, ripe for surface rusting

What have you got against paint stripper ?

I use it for most panels and easy-to-get-to surfaces (ie wherever you can get a scraper onto it to remove the mess), then finish off with a wire wheel in the angle grinder or a "rip-n-strip" disk (same as what Nissanman suggests I think, just a different brand) in tight spots. Then a run over with a sanding disk in a sander to remove the last bits that paint stripper doesn't get off.

For smaller areas i found those wire wheels that fit into a drill chuck work well.
I found a drill worked better than a grinder as the drill had a variable speed trigger which allowed slower speeds and less heat.
Grinders are either on (max rpm) or off...

True for single purpose grinder but I recommend an angle polisher with variable speed.
Uses a 180mm disc.
Autobarn had them out some time ago relatively cheap.
For the use mine gets it should last forever

i also use the stripper discs on both my polisher/buff and i also have a smaller one on a 100mm variable speed grinder. definately adhere to whast Nissanman said previously"slow and steady" i also use my die grinder with various wire wheels and flap wheels again with care. on large areas i also use paint stripper however i use a little differently in that i apply it evenly staying away from holes and seams, after about 5 mins i cover the area with builders plastic and allow the stripper to continue to work for about 10 minutes. this keeps the stripper from drying out and also allows the plastic to adhere to the panel.... why you ask..... then when you remove the plastic the paint and stripper is bonded to the plastic and i just dispose of the lot into the bin.. no mess on the ground easier than scrapers etc. I also use media blasting with great results but only in the hard to get at areas and along sandwich seams. my other means is a mollases bath for both large and small removable parts. let them soak for a week, pull them out of the bath and high pressure clean, dry them prime them..... really easy/efficient/cheap and it also eats away the rust to leave a well prepared panel/part or component. my 2 cents worth.

Nothing against stripper. I'll be using that also:) whilst on topic I've Hurd ppl mention washing off with water? How does the fresh metal go with water?

I wash any excess stripper off with wax and grease remover - works great.

Washing the stripper and paint off with water will cause flash rust, BUT, once you have cleaned the stripper off, dry the panel with a towel for example then spray it liberally with metho in a pump pack.
The metho will displace the remaining moisture and evaporate.
You could also then spray the are with WD-40 or CRC but you must clear that with your painter

you can wash it off with water with out any problem because your going to have to sand the whole area anyway.I normally use water or gunwash thinners when im at work

i use water, most moden cars and even my 240k have a zinc coating which helps with rust. you should then apply deoxidine before and prime work as well
