I ended up getting a second hand vl one. I figured for $50 it was worth a try. I've got it on but I don't have it charging.

For wiring I have the main positive wire going to the big positive post. this wire goes straight to the bat positive via a fuse.

The original black wire on a spade clip is connected to the d- post

I have tried the other 2 wires which plug into the bushes both ways round,

but still only 12 volts at the battery

Well I got it working by accident, by bridging the bare wires going to the brushes.

I don't understand why this has made it work though?

Yes there are more than one type of alt.
In the thread below i used BOSCH alternators.

Hi newbie here made the rookie mistake of posting before looking at at lurches how to video.
I posted in general discussion "Alternator holy grail" I don't know how to bring it to this posting so if you have a chance check it out it saved me a lot of stuffing around in the end. Cheers
