The clutch I forget although it was brand new, the old one was buggered and we didn't want to mate it to a new engine
The rear is disc brakes from an R31 Skyline, not sure on what type of springs though but thanks for the reference I'll look into it

When you build an engine or setup a head. Before you bolt the rocker cover on you should always check the valve clearances. I'm assuming that they surfaced the head also?
Great questions mate, wish I had of thought of that when I checked in there!So was it a blown head gasket? What do you mean by 'popping'? Do you mean backfiring out the intake? It's a new engine so I doubt they would have surfaced it so my guess is the gasket may have been faulty. "Popping" was the word they used which I took to mean as back-firing out the intake or at least |

If you blow a head gasket you should always have the head faced. Usually it'll leave a tiny score or indentation on the head where the gallery blew. They take only the tiniest bit off and if its too bad they weld the mark then face it. Backfiring out the intake will most likely not be the valve clearances. I'd double check the cam timing first. This is critical. Double check that your engine builder didn't put the distributor drive in 180 degrees backwards... If the ignition timing is waaaay advanced then it might backfire. Other cause could be dirty jet in the carburetor. So it's not getting the fuel to air and its coughing. |

Finally some good news!! Engine is now all fixed and working as expected, in the end it appears just a small correction to the valve lash was needed. She's going to undergo final road-test for brakes and other things and then hopefully we'll be done |

Big moment for us, this is her leaving the mechanics after 4 months of getting all the final RWC work sorted. She entered on the back of a tow-truck and left under her own power. First time in 4 years that the little Datsun has turned a wheel in anger on the road. https://vimeo.com/226838863 Couple of things from the drive home. Very lumpy at low revs, 76 degree cam probably has a bit to do with that, once it got up to 3000rpm it went along nicely. We may get the Weber's adjusted to give some better low-down response as it's only ever going to be a cruiser. Also the back end is really low, it's legal but the rear tyres are really splayed out so we might get some better springs. |

Fantastic mate. I bet that is something you are proud of! She does sound lumpy down low! What kind of clutch are you using at the moment? What kind of springs are you running at the moment? The KDRL07's are pretty good. Make sure you use the rubber spring seat on the body to keep the ride height. |

When the VASS Engineer puts the VIN number from the plate attached to the firewall on the VASS Certificate form, yet your mechanic uses the chassis number stamped onto the body on the front passenger side suspension turret (which they should) and VicRoads calls you out on it. ![[ img ]](https://media.giphy.com/media/6xgslyYQCyLa8/giphy.gif) Have to get another RWC with the VIN on it now as the VASS Engineer is apparently notoriously hard to get ahold of. Maybe, just maybe will get the H plate on Friday Then I think she needs some specialist carb tuning love at Bits of Italy, noticed some back-firing out the intake for the Weber DCOE's and want to get an expert onto it |

Turns out that the top radiator hose may be too close to the electronic dizzy and it is arcing across? Anyway we'll route some hose pipe down and away and see how we go |
