Hey all!

I have been browsing this forum for the last 5 years and figure it is well overdue that I say hi and introduce you all to the project that your tricks of the trade have been secretly helping me piece together.

First I should introduce myself, I'm Rychelle, I play a few games online so my user name always end up as Emme. You can call me either :) I'm in Melbourne.

So let me take you back a few years. In June of 2009 I came across an Antarctica White 566-12330 5MT 4 door 1970 P510 SSS and as soon as I saw it I feel in love. People told me I was crazy but I knew it was the one. Having been a Datsun fan since I was young, for me it was a simple choice. Since that day I have been restoring this beauty back to it's original condition as best as I can so it can be my everything car.

In a sense I was very lucky, as it was a good clean minimum rust, never been knocked about, ex-rally car with lots of Datsun factory accessories. It had been in dry storage since 87 (rego label and all).

So after over a hundred hours of labor I managed to stripped it. Sanded it all right back and then primed it. Had a panel beater friend take out all the rust and weld in new metal where it was needed. Keeping to it's true form I chose to paint it the original colour (had the factory paint sticker on it and all).

Whilst I was waiting for the body to get painted, I started on the engine. (Oh yes I didn't mention it before but so should have. After it's 22 years in a garage never being driven, my brother and I thought we would replace the fuel, fit a jump pack and turn the engine over, you know for the giggles... Would you believe me if I told you it started and idled? :D) A couple of modifications have been made here and there but it is pretty much the same as it was when it was a rally car with a couple of exceptions... Like changing twin Weber's to twin Hatachi round top SU's (Don't hate :( I'm a uni student that works at Macca's... I have fuel economy to think of :( and can put them back in when money isn't so tight)

So with that I am finally at the part where I get to piece my beautiful puzzle back together problem is I have found a few of the old parts not as usable as I had hoped... and am at a bit of a stand still... If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

I need:-

A good condition front bumper bar with mounting brackets.

The chrome bits for around the tail lights.

Boot, bailey channel & windscreen rubbers.

2 x bolt SU carb insulators

Would love to get my hands on the glove box owner handbook if I could

Oh and who do you guys use for repairs/chrome anodizing in Melb?

Bumper bar would be hard to find, they appear on ebay from time to time but expect to pay a bit for them unfortunately.

Windscreen rubbers you should be able to order online from Rare Spares

Tail lights are usually on Ebay but most likely a forum member will have some they're willing to sell.

Hi,

The panel shop I use can organise the re-chrome (Bayswater) Top Gun. They did my bumpers and came up really well.

Cheers,

Trent

Hey Datdrift,

Thanks for the welcome :)

I'll be running a twin Hatachi SU L18 (the 180B motor identical engine which is just a little bit faster). I hear that is what Datsun used back in the 70's when they were new. The plan is to be compliant for the standard class in motorsport events.

As for GT5. Not much of a motorsport game player. If I get that feeling I normally go for a few runs in the go-kart :D

Hey Nick,

Turns out they are harder to acquire than I had originally thought... Mine had some modifications done to it due to it's rally history. I'll keep you updated on it though.

Hey Hatchman,

Thanks for the help on finding the parts. I have already been searching on ebay and the likes...but nothing that has caught my eye has popped up yet. Rare Spares for the rubbers you say? Are they good quality? :D

Hey Trent,

Thanks for the advise but I was really hoping to find someone that specialises in re-chroming. :( But always great if I can't find anyone :D

Oh and there was one more thing I forgot to ask earlier that has really left me at a loss... Seatbelts... I was hoping to have inertia reel in both the back and front... Has anyone done this before? If so... what is the secret?

Much of a muchness I've got them from there before and they have been good. You can get them off ebay as well and some other places stock them as well.

I've never had a problem with Rare Spares so they are always my first port of call - others may have a different opinion though :) You can also order the parts from Rare Spares through Bursons outlets as well

Hey Jamiesix,

Thank you :D My panel beater did an amazing job and as they say hard work shows the results, so I'm proud as punch :D I put another shot in that I think shows it better.

Hey Baz,

Oh awesome!! Thanks a bunch! Now to just figure out the back

Hatchman,

Sweet I'll give them a call :D

Emme,
i only ask as occasionally i see people refer to theirs as a sss model when it really isnt.
In rally circles it is common for people to rename their cars and call it a sss so they can run the larger 1800cc motors in competition as in Japan they did come out as a H510 SSS with 1800cc from factory compared to most standard P510 with 1600cc engines. Calling it a sss also adds to the resale value- if you can get away with it.
Another common mistake is people see an optional extra tacho in the dash and automatically think they have a sss but this is not the case.
Sss models have a few distinguishing features which set them apart from Standard, GL or Deluxe model 510's.
That being the 6-dial dash, sss badging, 109hp engine plate (std are 96hp), twin su's, 219 cylnder head, tinted windows, different interior door trim, gusseted suspension, reclining seats, wooden steering wheel and gear knob and other optional extras such as engine bay light, air con, and bumper over riders etc.
If yours has none of these things then its probably not a genuine sss. The wiring looms under the dash also have a factory part number on them which can identify them easily.

Not having a go, im just interested as i have one myself and am sort of on a mission to see how many others are out there in Australia.
Love the attention to detail and paintwork on your resto so far. Keep going with it as it is coming along very well.

Hey Nick,

I can see you are really passionate about this and that is awesome :) When I purchase the car the previous owner had told me that it was a car built for a sole purpose, to rally in the standard class as a Datsun 1600 SSS. It was built by Datsun racing mechanics in the 70's for a professional rally driver by the exact specifications for that class. As for how it came out of the factory, I'm not sure but when I received it... it wasn't the same... The bumper was a welded bar, under the engine had a bash plate, in the boot there are straps that were used to hang onto when they needed to get it out of a ditch, and don't even get me started about the wiring. I could continue on about all the things that had been changed but at the end of the day even when I have finished, it still won't be exactly the same as a factory model SSS but I feel that it will be closer to a SSS than it will a GL or Deluxe. Once again it will be built to the same specifications it was in the 70's, to be a car capable of running in a standard class as a Datsun 1600 SSS. I will do some further research though, now you have me curious!
