I'm using an R180 from a stanza here, and it has taken a lot of punishment. Personally i'm keen to try a WRX R160.

:?: :?:
Which Stanzas had IRS?

Graham - what engine are you running in your 1600? Unless it's a full house turbo, then a R180 will do the trick. Even the R160s can take a hell of a beating. The R200 is a big, heavy unit, and you don't really want to use one unless it's absolutely necessary.

IRS stanza????????
dont think so dude.

people put volvo rear ends in there Stanza's cause they Cant put an R160/R180 in!

Best thing the swed's make is PrOn, not diff's.
Thats one reason I wont buy a stanza! NO IRS!!!!
Changing a diff has never been easier with the IRS, try changing a diff in a stanza in under 2 hours! good luck.

EASY!!!

Dont go putting down live axle cars. A well sorted live axle car is no slouch on either dirt or tar. What car won the Victorian Clubman Rally Series last year? Stanza with a live axle

If I'm not mistaken, Volvos run a Dana 30 diff, which is pretty unbreakable. (Dana 60s were used behind Big Block Mopar engines in Dodge/Chrysler muscle cars  )

They're great in a car with a live rear (nice for a Torana - same stud pattern!). But shoehorning one of those into a 1600 would be quite an excersise, especially when compared with what it'd take to drop in an R200.

Just My Humble Opinion,

Cheers,

as to how big the volvo is it would have to be cut to fit a 1600 to fit width wise. but as for how heavy???? anything other than the orginal is going to be heavy.

There's a bit more involved than just cutting it down - like designing and fabricating a whole means of mounting and locating a live axle diff and appropriate suspension. It'd be a BIG job.

And although an R200 lsd, with the appropriate custom moustache bar and shortened halfshafts might set you back $2500-3000 to drop into a 1600, it is basically a larger, heavier duty version of what the car already has. And you'd probably spend more getting a live axle conversion done right. :?

This leaves the big question - why would you want the Volvo diff :?:

Cheers,

Hey what kinda cars it for?
U talkin 1600?

As Warps said the standard R160 can take a hell of a beating ive got mates with wildly worked L20's with welded lockers and some without, these things just keep goin and ive seen more broken halfshafts and uni's than ive seen stranded cars due to the diff blowing.

What engine r u planing a Import Turbo or a Turbo L series?

Im plannin to use the standard R160 till it gives me greif, then when the time comes ill have to get a R180 mind you these are not LSD well not the cheaper ones anyhow

You can get a R180 from a 240k or even a C210 skyline although ull have to use halfshafts from a different car to get the C210 to work...

LSD if u have to ask what it is... chances are high that ull never require it anyhow. The R200 is lsd, but a very cheaper solution can come from welding up a R180

When Locking ive heard that as long as ur welds are strong (possibly done by a profesional) they can crack and return to non locked status mind you noisy and almost undrivable

R160 fitted to 510's and 610's, easy to get if blown...

R180 fitted to C210's and 240k's, slightly bigger than R160 but stronger internals

R200 i think some 260Z's and DR30's, ive seen these in pics, the R200 is twice the size of the R160 next to it... low weight is very important in getting a car fast

with the volvo diff its live axel and the 510 is IRS its a totally different concept...i wouldnt bother

prices you ask...?

Ive seen R180 in my local wrecker for the tidy price of $80
but if you look in the trader ur likely to find some chum asking + $200

R200 ive seen in the trader for $1500 to $2000 when it comes down to that u have to ask urself what ur using the car for and how will the heap of weight and LSD make up for that $2000 gap in ur pocket

Thats my opinion...

ps... after all that you then have the choice of which ratio to use...

Graham i dont know why u would want to spend $2000 on a r200 LSD where subaru offers a much more pocket friendly alternative..

WRX LSD, Liberty RS LSD, RX Turbo LSD, list goes on.....

much cheaper and still tough enough.. EXACTLY SAME DIFF!!! Made my same company!!!!

Maybee Warps might want to donate his R160 LSD in his WRX??
