L26 Carby - 3 Speed Auto

In the process of converting it to efi and manual using a 280zx donour car.

I'm a D!ck tho and I picked this 280zx up and thought, yep efi L28 and 5 speed manual, woohoo. Paid for it and drove it 100km's back home. Started pulling it apart and found it was an import with a bloody L20E, damnit.

Oh well, stripped what I wanted off the 280zx and got the rest hauled off by the scrap guy. As this was my first experience with the L series engines I was also clueless about the notches in the intake ports of the efi heads. Having dabbled a bit in head porting with my trusty Dremel I was just going to notch out the injector slots in the non efi L26 head myself but just today I took off the carby manifold and exhaust manifold on the L26 then laid the L20E manifold gasket onto the L26 block and I've got a bigger problem now, the 4 main bolt holes that hold the efi intake manifold on are not even drilled in the L26 head. Shall I drill them and tap a thread? Or should I just make it easy an get a N42 head? How easy are they to get and what sort of coin are they worth?

It would be much easier to get a n42 head, otherwise it is fairly easy to drill and tap the EFI holes.

Read this

http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/72851-s ... t+%2Bheads

Read it all. It's done on my L26 bottom end, as you will find out. It will solve many issues. I only suggest that you change the cam to something along similar lines as what I did to maintain your low rpm torque.

It goes really well and sounds unreal!

:)

Nice pics too, btw!

The only thing I don't like about having to drill and tap the 4 new holes is that the 2 middle ones will be stepped down..

Good read sir, but do you know what? I left the L20E engine in the 280XZ when I got the wrecker to pick it up and now I see it would of been good to put the L20E head on the L26 block, argh!!! :( Would of also saved me from having to drill and tap this E88 head.

That is a shame about the little 2 litre engine but sheet happens!

Nice setup with the surge tank and fuel pump.... looks a lot like mine in the coupe! :)

Ummm, you probably know this, but I would stuff a lot of foam rubber into the ports before you start drilling, tapping and grinding. I have found that foam is the best for this job.

Take your time. Good luck with it.

Cheers mate, yeah I was going to stuff the ports with clean rags but if foam rubber does the trick better then cool :)

I saw a pic of your setup in the couple, looked like a good template to go off by :)

I should hope fully have the 5 speed bolted up by the end of the weekend, just a few small things such as replace the rear main seal, sump gasket, insert the spigot bush into the back of the crankshaft and put the crossmember for the auto box onto the manual.

Need help tho, there's three sensors on the manual I'm fitting and I don't know what they're for, well I know one is at least for the reverse lights but I wouldn't know what one that is either. I've tried to look it up but can't really find anything.

The gearbox came out of a early 80's imported 280zx fitted with a non turbo L20E.

Thanks for your help Oz.

Few more pics of the manual swap, didn't get much time today to work on it.

New sump gasket, rear main seal, spigot bearing fitted to accomodate the input shaft, flex plate fitted and manual flywheel bolted up. Ah stupid sump gasket, had to lift the engine up off the engine mounts to get enough clearance for the pan to clear the oil pickup, that took most of my time.
