Hey boys.

Well i took delivery of my new project last night.
A 72 1600 which was an unfinished rebuild/project.
Always wanted another Datto.....and always wanted one wi an FJ!!

I recently sold my S14a which i built up over 6 years. This car was awesome. Very reliable, very fast and fun with around 270rwkw, but very very defectable and the cops loved throwing yellow stickers on it.

So this got sold about 6 weeks ago, and i just recently found out that the guy who bought it obviuosly didn't know how to drive a car with close to 300rwkw and wrote the thing off and totally killed the car.

I had a 1600 about 10 years ago, but sold this to pay for my honeymoon. The things we do for chicks!!
Here is a pic i found of it. Mine is the purple one, and the blue one was my brothers.

He has also just bought a 68 model as he sold his for the same reasons. So we have both just bought 1600's again which is cool.

So back to the new purchase.
It was obviously a risk for me buying a car that i had not seen in person. But i was sent a million pics by the owner who was very honest about the condition of the car which is great. I have looked at several Dattos in vic and most of them just arent what they are advertised as.

It has an FJ transplanted already, bigger brakes, suspension mods cooler etc etc. the old owner basically stripped the car down to rebuild it and now it is in my hands.

So when i picked it up yesterday from the transport depot me and my bro were very very pleased with the body. Basically rust free apart from a few small spots.

Upon first inspection......looks like we got a winner!

So since getting it home and going rough the many boxes of parts in the boot and inside the car i will pretty much itemize everything so i know what i have and what i need .
I will then write down a bit of a plan as to what needs to be done.
I will pull the engine out and finish off the engine bay. Give it some paint and then give the FJ a bit of a freshen up.

My plans for te car is to make it into a nice clean fast streeter. I will be going for the sleeper look. Slammed on hubbies, venetians etc......will see how long that lasts!!

The parts that need replacing/repairing are the rear qtr. ii have a replacment panel for this if required.
The rear tailgate panel has a spot of rust. See pic. Not sure how bad it is yet.

I have a new front and rear valance to put on.

I pulled the front and rear bumpers off and they are nice and straight and in pretty good nic actually.
[ img ]

As i slowly go through all the parts i have i will update as i go.

I am not real familiar with FJ's. I have only really played with SR's, so i will be asking heaps of questions.
Looking forward to getting stuck into this project, and learning lots from all you guys as i go.

So i continued going through the various boxes of bits and pieces today. Found the headlight surrounds in pretty good nic too.
The front grill was in bits, but it was really really straight which was awesome.
So i spent a bit of time putting that together.
Just trying to figure out what parts i have, what i dont have and what i need to get.
Below grill in bits.

All back together with the headlight surrounds sitting next to it.

I thought i would semi instal them on to see how she looked.

I found the front and rear windscreen chrome strips and gave them a good clean also.
Anyone got any tips for installing these without making a meal of it?

Nice score mate. tuff looking S14. for some reason i still like 14's much more than 15's. Maybe because 15's are everywhere and over done?

Has your bro's 1600 been in a magazine before? looks very familiar. not to mention it's the same colour as my old 1600 ;)

As for the windscreen moulds, I watched the guy installing my windscreens and strips, he used plenty of lube and a plastic windscreen tool.

With the windscreen moulds make sure you put them in with the windscreen out and it shouldn't be too hard.

Na his Datto was never in any mags. I can tell you they both looked nice but up close they needed a lot of work.

Continued going over the car today. Pulled the rear section of the exhaust off.
I have seen this set up a few times in Dattos running FJ's with the exhaust looping with two massive ass mufflers.
Is this required to pass engineers? See below pic.
[ img ]

I have gone over the car and can really only find two areas with rust and they are both on the rear tail light panel at each lower corner.
I will get into this with a wire wheel and see how bad it is.....hopefully not too bad.
[ img ]
Removed the tail lights as they didn't have gaskets, and i wanted to check for any surface rust underneath... All good.

From inside the boot.

Can anyone tell me part# to know if the diff i have js the std R160? It is def a single pegger and pretty sure it is a R160 and just want confirmation.

Hey mate,

Are you getting the shell blasted?

If you want to remove the factory sound deadener, mine came off quite easily with a paint scraper and where needed some paint stripper. Maybe give that a go.

Cheers,

Trent

Trent- NA I'm not gunna blast it. I'm trying to keep it as simple as I can. It is pretty much rust free so I just wanna clean it up as much as I can.
I'll give it a crack tomorrow with a scraper.
It is really only the rear part as the front is already pretty clean.

After I removed the front seats the sliders and rails have seen better days.
They are pretty beat up. Are there any other seat brackets and rails that could bolt up to the factory seats?
