I have a 1600 stanza with a sss camshaft and new valve seats and valves and the car seems starve of fuel OR have an electical fault as you rev the engine. When i drive the car it has a very flat spot.
We have done the following:
1 Set the float level and saw that the floats have no cracks or fuel in them.
2 Checked the needle and seats
3 cleaned the fuel pump
4 Checked the valve gap
5 Fitted new fuel filter
6 Put on new plug leads
7 new spark plugs
8 new condensor
9 new points.
10 new dizzie cap
11 Set the timing to 6 deg [we are at 1500m above sea level]
12 Checked that the vacum advance is working and not leaking.
13 Checked to see that the advance weight spring is on and the weight is there [there is only one]

The car ran perfectly before this started and then died on the highway.I then found the one float was cracked so replaced it.
Now i cant even get past 90KPH and cannot think of anyting else
Does anyone know what i can do as this is driving me drink 20 brandys in one go!!!
Thanks in antipation :cheers

Couple ideas:
Check the carby jets arnt blocked. (Might be easier to just borrow/buy another whole carby and see if its that first quickly).
Check the fuel tank and lines arnt partially blocked.

you have obviously done some head work? why dont you try taking the timing chain/belt off and resetting base timing again? sounds like a timing issue to me. half a tooth out will result in sh*t idle, but sounds like you've wound everything else to compensate for that...

Thanks will look at again but i am now going to place in a another dizzie to see what happens and check the exhaust manifold bolts for a leak under the manifold. By the way this dizzie on this car has only one vacumn weight and not two like my 1800 sss.

Is the timing spot on. Retarded timing makes it idle and drive like rubbish

The timing is correct but a fellow here said look at the valve springs cause maybe a spring has given up the ghost and stopped working properly.

Well i have checked the valve gaps
Changed the dizzie and no better
Checked the carbs again
Checked the bolts under the inlet manifold
The car seems to be struggling to get the correct fuel/air into the engine and has a very bad flat spot so cant rev.
I think the car must be sucking extra air but from where i dont know.
Maybe we have a split pipe from the brake booster???
ANY IDEAS FOR ME except matches cause i love my car.

New air filter? Are the carbs getting fuel to them? I'm assuming your running su's?

you mention carbs? SUs or webers?

slap a DGV and manifold on there and see if proplem change.
As for SUs they are old.

I believe my old Datsun book mentions 14deg adv

points or electric ignition?points the bushing can wear and cause popoing or High rpm loss.

your cam is timmed and oil pump?

I occasionally get the same problem. Advance it some more, not too much as it will ping!
And play with fuel ratio.
I have SUs and find about 8 deg and running reasonable fuel is good

Any ideas may help me too tho!!! Lol

Hi guys,
How do i connect the white resistor[ballast] next to the coil the correct way?The wire to the condenser is from the neg on the coil and the positive goes where. If i disconnect the white resistor do i join the two wires the complete the circuit. We do not get any spark at the plugs even if i connect the coil wire direct to the plug and place it against the engine block.

Thanks for the diagram guru and guess what we found the fault. The points spring was earthing against the bracket it swivels on .Such a minor thing but you really had to look closely at it to see it.Oh the wires were the wrong way round on the positive and neg on the coil.  :cheers :cheers
