Ahh perfect, thanks for this. I'm going to see Steve about this. I need the rings he has for it. I have to get off my #$% and do it.

So your saying the hole that needs to be cut out is the size of the inside of the ring?

The rings are quite thin. Not big enough to tap holes for a bolt

2 door Tim's 1st post
8. We drilled small 'starter' holes in the metal of the tank to allow us to use a coarse screw to anchor the pump. Also a sealing gasket needs to be used to seal between the pump and the ring welded to the tank.

Sounds like Tim used self tappers into the metal of the tank.
The ring welded to the tank is there for sealing purposes not for fixing.

Wouldn't self tapping screws be a bit unreliable especially because the fuel tank metal is so thin? Would it be possible to weld some nuts into the tank and bolt it down that way?

I wonder how he has gone with the holley hydramat that is a cool looking piece of kit.

Im guessing he hasn't had a problem but I always hear people saying to keep electric's away from fuel systems is it safe to have a battery so close to the tank like that?

I think the tank conversion is a great idea but I wouldn’t recommend using any type of screw that penetrates the tank and certainly not self tappers. The screw thread will allow a small amount of fuel vapour to exit the tank. Also, I can't see for sure if the battery is lead acid but if it is, it's not a good idea to have it on its side as this would expose the plates to some degree.

rapa59 - Could you not just get a thicker bit of steel and make up a lower ring, drill the holes ( not the whole way through just enough to get a thread in there) and tap them?

Hailest - on the first page you were saying you're not sure the swirl pot is big enough, wouldn't that holly hydramat circumvent the need for a swirl pot?

If you guy's start this project please post some pics, would be keen to see how you go, I really like the idea of not having to run a surge tank and pump outside the tank.

Hey mate, yes the hydra mat is a great option however the price! It's not cheap.

Can't really see it working with just the 1 ring welded to tank, cause like said the self tappers are a bit dodgy plus if you have to get at pump you wear out the holes the self tappers made which will cause more leaks. Also can't really weld nuts to bottom of ring as the holes are too far to edge of ring and also they will keep the ring sitting up on the tank not flush so can't weld.

Only proper way of doing it I see is making a new ring for the tank out of thicker material then tapping it to screw into, the plus side of this is you can use the original screws that holds the pump in and just tap the thicker ring to suit

If you are starting from scratch the hydramat price is quickly negated if you spec out a surge tank, fittings, etc.

It's also good piece of mind, however there has to be a way of making a good outcome without by just using a factory swirlpot.

In regards to the self tapers, JB weld is probably not a bad option, just place blobs under the holes, let it dry, then drill & tap. Or as Rapa said just get a piece of thicker metal & tap a thread in that.

In case you guys missed it, here is the R31 install -> http://www.ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=7070

$5 for a 5mm thick bit of plate. Will be cutting ring out and tapping holes and see how it goes. Making the ring bit wider too so the screw holes arnt so close to the edge
