Post subject:  Starter motor problem after converting to manual
Converted a car to manual, but when i went to bolt the flywheel up it didnt seem to sit close enough to the engine, there was a bit of a gap, and the ring gear sat further in then on the flex plate. There didn't seem to be any way to make it sit closer so i just put it in and now the starter motor doesn't engage, what did i **** up?

A bit unusual that.
The auto trans. flex plate does use a spacer come reinforcing plate.
You didn't accidentally have that on the end of the crank shaft when the fly wheel was fitted up did you?
Do you know how far the ring gear needs to move to engage the starter pinion correctly?

Ahhh well I didn't remove anything from the end of the crank so that Is probably my issue. The flywheel looked like it was sitting a inch or so away from where it should be..
.. Time to pull the engine again! :-s

The flex plate spacer, if still there, wouldn't account for an inch.
I agree you will need to separate the trans from the engine, but the engine could be left in the car.
Don't forget that the starter pinion will extend to engage the ring gear when it gets energised.
Perhaps just pull the starter first and check that the function is correct :idea:

When i have fitted flywheels in the past i have thought to myself that the gap between the block and the ring gear is too large, but that is how it is.

I would still pull the flywheel off and have a look for a spacer, obstruction. then have a look at the starter motor.

Maybe try and connect the starter to a battery using jumperleads out of the car. See if the pinion gear fully extends out.

Just had a look at my photos, I did pull off the spacer, so I'll have a play with the starter motor before pulling the box out. Are starters the same between auto and manual?

I would expect the starters to be the same.
Looking at the L16 I have here, the flywheel ring gear is only about 15mm from the rear of the engine block.

When I converted my brother's 260Z to manual, we didn't have to change starters, so I assume they are the same.

Same starters but I found auto ones larger. This was only an issue in my l series 1200 where I strugled to maneuvere the large ones in. They did fit but barely

I just remembered that my brothers race 240z was having problems starting. The started would jam with the ring gear sometimes
Turns out the previous owner installed a mitsubishi starter on there. The number of teeth or tooth pattern was wrong. Bolt pattern was fine.
