Thanks lads. I have started on the rear left dogleg area,

I drilled out that that piece behind, then cut out any chunk that was rusted or pitting.

[ img ]

ye old paper template trick, has worked wonders so far

Cut out this little rusty bit and replaced with new metal triangle, such a delicate operation lol

I then removed the sill section, I'll let the pics do most the talking.

I've welded that piece in and currently finishing off with a lil filler. Currently a work in progress, will put up pic once its done.

Whilst repairing rust, I've been accumulating a few bits.
Scored some '68 lights from a member on here, not perfect but happy with them for the price I paid.

PLMS loom, so incredibly excited by this, wiring is something im terified of so this should help..
[ img ]

Just Jap cooler, 450x300x76 with 3inch outlets

And I got a saab radiator set-up last week, it originally came off a fairly known 1600 coupe..
Setup is just sitting there for fitment at the moment, I will put more pics up once its all fitted.

I got the cooler months before the rad, basically I want the cooler snug behind the grille without any excessive modifying, the rad and fans just had to work around this concept.
The saab one seems to do the trick as its a good size.

As it sits now..

Amazing what you can achieve with basic tools and a good attitude! How do you find welding those really small pieces, is it a challenge?

Hey Anth, sorry delayed response lol yeah it can be challenging, bit fiddly, when the metal is too thin or too much gap is when it can blow out.
But the good ironic news is the mistakes can be fixed by more welding haha

I've started on more rust repairs, drivers rear qtr is half done, pics to come

Hello ozdaters,

Have been working on the datto every weekend. Can finally apreciate why panel beaters are pretty expensive as there's just so much labour involved.
Having said that though, I do spend alot of time just staring at it thinking, and also sitting in the cabin moving the gearstick back & forth making dose noises.

The car was 96% rust free, it's about 98% rust free now haha
I'm complaining but from what i've seen in other builds I have it pretty good i think.

Drivers rear qtr:

[ img ]

chop chop

[ img ]
[ img ]

more chop

[ img ]

I wont post the full 10 gig photoshoot, but basically its how ive done most the metal work, make a paper template, trace it out on metal, cut fold bend etc

[ img ]
[ img ]

tacked into position
[ img ]

this little piece, sorry crappy pic
[ img ]

I then had to work out how to meet the rear qtr panel to the rear beaver, went rust digging with the flathead.
[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]

[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]

Welded this tiny boot floor section
[ img ]

[ img ]

I did start to grind welds back but then realised there wasnt much point weekening it if this area is covered up.
Primed and applied fish oil.

[ img ]

Replacement panel, tack tack

[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]

Took me a while to get my head around how to meet it all up, had to make a little stepper piece so the beaver would snug flat on top, and we all love a nice and snug beaver.
Had a few attempts on the vice trying to make a 1mm Z shape, but bending it back and forth proved in-effective.
I ended up laying the little piece over the edge of sheetmetal i had flat on the bench, then hamered it from above, that worked a treat, then curved the lower bit.

[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]

[ img ]
New piece made up and tacked

[ img ]

[ img ]

Also thought i'd share a tool I made dubbed the 'Inananmite Carbon Rod'
I read somewhere online that you cant weld steel onto copper, i bought a little copper plumbing fitting from bunnings, bashed it with a hammer to get my desired shape, then attached to some RHS. I made it to shape the curved lower beaver section, I have used this heaps as a backing plate and as extra support fixing blow holes, filling pinholes, larger gaps between metal and much more!

[ img ]

'Dont thank me, thank the rod'

[ img ]

Bought a few more goodies and am also balls deep into a sill repair, more updates to come.
:D

Love the Simpsons reference!

Great work so far, the 1600 in the shed (not the one being built) is rusted up like this. Your thread is giving me hope I can get it fixed!

Bit of an update is lurking,
Decided to put the rust repairs on HOLD for now, becomes quite draining after a while.

[ img ]
[ img ]

I've pulled the rear end out and have almost completed its overhaul,

[ img ]

Just some modified r31 brake brackets for now.

Welded up the original holes
[ img ]

grinded back the welds
[ img ]

shaved a mm out of the middle
[ img ]

slight trimming around the side and she's good to go
[ img ]
[ img ]

Still dont quite get how the common way of doing this only using 3 bolts and half the bracket.
The method I've used was easy and should do the job, unless I'm missing somthing?

MORE TO COME

I think I have the twin to this car, rust included! did it come from central vic? What do you plan to do with the wiper motor problem? im running an l series in mine but have notice with the twin cam motors the wiper motor doesn't fit? nice work by the way and I can relate to what you mean by getting sick of rust repairs.

Funny you say that as it did come from woodend, which is centralish.
My mate drove it back from there and I bought it off him.
Weird to think it's last drive wasn't that long ago!

Not aware of the wiper problem, I may have to relocate it a bit

Coming along nice mate. Takes me back to my rustoration. All the welding you're doing and fabbing parts is exactly how I did it without any pro tools either. Make sure you coat them all well in a weld through primer, then fish oil the beast out of it and it'll be fine for years to come!
I run the same SAAB radiator as you but all alloy. I modified mine to take an overflow bottle rather than expansion tank though. I can spot Jeff's old rad a mile off! I suggest not using the 450mm cooler though. Try and go for a 400mm if you can. It'll help with a bit more air flow going through the rad on those hot days and you wont need to chop your front up as much if you haven't already?

Cheers guys,

Yeah jeff ran the expansion tank tucked behind the front guard, might sus out yours on your build page.
I didn't need to cut much at all for the cooler, just a light trim :)
It's all still just sitting there at the moment, i plan on making some sort of ducting to get all the air through the rad, guess I'll see how it all goes!

So good to be working on something that's not rust repairs!

Welded in a RHS off cut into the stock exhaust hole for the hole saw drillbit to bite, then welded in 4 inch steel tube

[ img ]

[ img ]

[ img ]

[ img ]

Removing the stock bushes & brackets took me a loong time

[ img ]

[ img ]

Welding in the datsport adjustable kit
[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]
[ img ]

Stripped back the paint, cleaned all the welds and painted

I'm now replacing the bearings then will be reassembling everything with a few other new goodies
