Hey guys
Ive done plenty of reading and still not 100% confident in an answer.
I currently have my 1600 1970 model on stands doing suspension and brake mods. Im eventually wanting to put and LSD in it as I will be doing an SR20det conversion.
What im not confident on:
What lsd do I put in? R160, R180, R200
I want a diff that requires next to no mods to fit (im happy to do a few little things)
What cars do I get the LSD diff out of.

Thanks in advance for the info

Diff size you choose depends on the power and planned use of car amongst other things.
The more power or harsher you use your car, the bigger diff youll need.
Most turbo cars make a fair bit of power so you in this case would be looking at the R180 or R200 sized diffs i guess as the R160 is the smallest size and i would only really recommend that to non turbo cars that dont drag race or rally etc.
Once you decide on the physical size of the diff required then you need to decide on a gear ratio.
The size and ratio you choose will narrow down what vehicle you need to find to get the lsd from.
You may already have the ideal size and ratio 'open' diff in your car already and might be able to just buy the lsd guts and install this into your current diff.

Theres lots of info on lsd's if you search this forum. Like these:

http://www.ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4034

http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=11838

http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f= ... 8&start=75

Most of the R180 and R200 lsd's need some custom parts to fit e.g:
-The R200 needs a moustache bar and either modified 260z uni half shafts or complete custom cv axles.
-The Subie R180 will need custom halfshaft adaptors and the std uni half shafts or complete custom cv axles.

There is a factory R180 clutch pack lsd found in jdm datsuns but these are very very rare and command a very high price so are generally out of the picture.
Most easily found R180 and R200 lsd's will also likely need a tailshaft flange change to bolt up your datsun tailshaft.
This means ontop of finding the lsd diff youll need to find the same sized open diff from a datsun aswell to use the flange from it.

Very confusing for beginners but this is an advanced modification that is not easy to explain as there are a variety of ways and parts to achieve a similar result depending on your skill and budget.

Best you research as much as possible with key words like:
Datsun, R180, R200, lsd, diff, 1600, cv, axle, long nose, short nose, ring gear, moustache bar, etc...

Agree with Nick. Firstly let's find out what you want to do with the car. Drag? Race? street? All of the above?

Thanks heaps for the info so far guys. The car will just be a weekend cruiser. Currently running L18 but an SR will eventually go in. From the sounds of it, R180 would be sufficient and possibly the easiest fit. Ratio's is one thing I have no idea about.

Don't really need a diff at the moment, but I figured why I've got it on stands doing rear disc and front strut conversion, and changing rest springs it would be an ideal time.

What is the easiest R180 diff option to go with. Source an LSD standard or but open diff and rebuild?

Appreciate the info guys.

I run a subi r180 suretrac lsd in my 1600. It's a 3.9 ratio out of a sti wrx, mine cost $500 off eBay. I run modified output flanges to bolt on Datto half shafts but you can buy billet machined ones, or run a cv set up.
I'm only running a quick l18 So I can't comment how the sr will go but as long as you don't chase max power and not hard on the diff it should last alrite.

Im looking at getting an R180 from an STi with 3.9 ratio. Does anyone know if any datsuns (240/260z, DR30 etc) output flanges will suit the STi spline count?

Yellow1600 - I have sent you a PM also.

DR30 runs an R200 (IIRC). I have a DR30 LSD (Clutch type) with 29 spline input shafts / stub axles.

i get many peeps asking me for an LSD for the long nose R200 but although I cant help
I wonder with the cheap price and plethora of late R200 short nosed diffs and CVs if
there is someone who has a kit/frame to suit retrofitting into earlier 1600 510 chassis?
or its not worthwhile for other reasons besides nostalgic resto value?

There are R200 LSD centres you can buy that suit both long nose and short nose (10mm/12mm CW holes), or you can shim a 12mm down to 10 with some special shims from Les Collins.
The only problem is making sure the spline count and diameter of the stub axles is the same as you want to run.

Nope. Google "beta motorsports axles" to see what is needed.

http://www.wolfcreekracing.com/index.ph ... &Itemid=31

Or get the STI driveshafts, machine off the CV joint "cup", make up a flange to suit the 1600 driveshafts and get them welded together.

Me too!
I know it's not ideal, but shirley a short nose can be adapted to the rear cross member!

Probably cost prohibitive by the time you mod the rear cmember and moustache bar and then lengthen the tailshaft...

I have a kaaz 2 way in my r200 longnose that has the 12mm bolts shimmed to 10mm also i was told that the s13 non lsd r200 has the same 29 spline count as the r200 longnose because it's not a viscous so the shafts are the same

Or just get a R200 longnose with the larger 12mm bolts to start with, Then you can use any shortnose center in it,
For what you want to do an R180 will be amples weight and power is the enemy of the diff along with grip. You weight will always be low so the R180 should be fine so long as it isn't stuffed to begin with,
