Hi guys,

First time poster here. Wish it was for a better reason. Went to do a simple service on my partners '73 180B and spotted a coolant leak. At this point she decided to tell me that it had overheated previously that week. Found it was the rear core plug under the exhaust manifold. Not a fun job. Replaced both plugs under the manifold with brass ones for good measure while i was at it.

Got it all back together ready to start and it wouldn't. Now I've found a much more significant coolant leak from the shared intake/exhaust gasket. Spark plugs appear to be a bit fouled up (though I hadn't checked them yet previously so not sure if this is a symptom). There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary when I check the dipstick either. Can't check for smoke from the exhaust since I can't get it running.

Looking for suggestions please. Is it a BHG? Is it something else?

Hey mate did you take the exhaust off?

If it's leaking from the manifold gasket there's a high chance there is water in the cylinders. Drain the radiator first and then pull the manifolds off and replace the gasket. Blow out the cylinders with an air compressor to get rid of any water in there currently. Replace the spark plugs and try to start it. If it starts fill the radiator up and should be good to go.

I always Block the head to manifold coolant passages. A 13mm bolt with sealant does the job. Just cut it and smooth it out.
I cut 15mm lengths of bolt and slot one end like a flat head screw. Tap the head port lightly. Smear a thin bead of silicon on the bolt thread and screw it in. Seals nice for me. No more leaks

If its leaking from the manifold, fix that then see how you go. You're going to have to fix it anyway.
