About two years ago I sold a rebuilt A87 head which had been ported, with a cam, for $200. In my opinion $350 is pricey, I understand that A87 heads are getting harder to find but not that hard yet!

I was told good heads suitable for reco range from $50-$150 depending on condition. I was recently quoted $280 to reco one but i think new guides where an extra $80 if it needed them. I dont agree that they areeasy to come buy in good condition. Most ive seen have been faced many times and cooked at some stage not too mention corrosion. Check the surface that the head bolts pull up on too make sure they have marked the head too much from over tightening overheating or both. I believe the stock head should be 108mm in thickness and below 107 mm is getting long in the tooth.

Is it me or is a a87 head a stock 1800 head? $350 is way too much as a datsun wrecker in adelaide quoted me (guess who it was.....) if it was rare than yes but u can still buy a whole pos 180b for $350. They need to relise when I pay $350 for a stock part then spend $400 recoing it and at $750 its ready to use ill start looking at other options.... datsuns arnt rare. Thousands were sold and many still exist

id pay 350 for a reconditioned one if it had been done well. For a stock one then no i personally wouldn't pay that much

A good ported race head is worth 2K minimum.
You need to make sure the foundation is good before you invest that sort of money.

I have scrapped more heads than I have used.
I don't sell them , because I only find one good one out of 10.

Most are porous, internal oil leaks, or over machined.
My pet hate is people that stuff good heads by machining them to up the compression.

If I needed an A87 head for a customers race/rally engine.
I would pay over $300 for a head if it was pressure tested, not soft, was over 107.5mm,
and in good condition.
Otherwise I would not be able to build the engine.
But heads like I need are very hard to find.

I agree with Baz. I must have 20+ Datsun heads sitting in my shed. I would only say 3 are good for race use. If it's a good head with no corrosion, hasn't been surfaced and isn't soft then $350 is fine to pay I think.
