Wondering if my stock l18 bottom end would make more power and or torque than my old stroked l16 with flat tops.
Same l18 crank and l18 rods just smaller bore in l16 and l16 has l24 flat tops in it.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other ??

Stock L18 may make slightly more torque, due to slight capacity increase, stroked L16 may make slightly more power due to compression increase. I don't think there would be much in it either way.

Thats what I was thinking. A bit less torque may be kinder on the sss box

L16 with L18 crank, L16 rods and shorter milled or shorter height comp 85mm pistons would be better than stock L18

edit: some have used Z20 pistons of some sort

What will be the crank stroke, and the rod centre to centre length of each variation?
A shortest pin height piston is prefferable.
Depending on meat/thickness in the crown, can always dock a bit off the piston top.

Not sure on the measurements jason, it was the old motor out of my 1200 so all I remember are the parts. I didnt screw it together just know l18 crank l16 rods ans 240k/z pistons (flat tops).
Went well on lpg would go better with petrol that im sure of

L16 stroker feels more punchier and revs cleaner then the l18 did. Plus it doesn't ooze oil from the rear main or sump.

Now about building a long rod l18.

Got the l18. Got crank got l16 stanza rods. Is it just machining 3 mm off the l18 pistons for flat tops or are there pistons to suit stock bore?

Just as you said, machine the difference of the rods off the face of the piston too make flat tops. It works out that the dish on a std l18 piston is completely removed so the piston crown should be just as strong

I seem to vaguely recall that 280ZX pistons were the ones to use, but I could be wrong too.
Also better with 240K rods, bit beefier section and bigger bolts than the L16 rods

My L18 runs 1mm oversize L28 pistons.
