Hi

I have a few gearbox questions.

Failing to find a F5C71B(Direct Drive) / FS5C71B(Overdrive) Datsun Competition gearbox to use in a Rally & gymkhana Stanza, what other close-ratio gearbox would be best to use behind a hot L20B?

To which production Datsun/Nissan models was the FS5C71B fitted?

Which 5-speed transmission was fitted to L28-powered R30 Skylines?

Is the FS5W71B (280ZX) totally uneffective in a rally car?

Could a FS5W71C (S13 180SX) work?

Regards

I'm no gearbox expert but finding an old Option gearbox would be ideal. But I can't imagine that finding one would be easy or cheap.

Based on my experience a lot of Datsun 5-speeds don't have the best ratios, there is usually a big jump between second and third. Ideally you want a Zed box if you're going to use a standard Datsun box. I had a 280ZX gearbox once and even behind a particularly slow L20B the ratios felt great. 260Z should be even better.

I don't believe there were any L28 MR30 Skylines but the L24 versions had a strong 5-speed that will suit your Stanza. I can't comment on the ratios though. Check the technical section for an explanation on short and long L-series gearboxes.

An S13 Silvia or 180SX gearbox would be useable with a bell housing swap. Again I can't comment on the ratios. If it were me I'd chase a Zed gearbox and go from there.

Big dip in 2nd to 3rd in mr30 skyline box.
dat2k is the guy to wait for. I thought 4 speeds were prefered for strength in these applications and ratios.

Ideally I'd like to find a 1:1 5th Datsun box, but haven't yet.

In South Africa, the R30 Skyline was available with both carburetored or fuel-injected L28, in 4 door sedan or 2 door hardtop form.
The Laurel (C31) was also available with the L28.

If I'm correct, the ratios of the carburetored L28's would be 3.300(1st) 2.077(2nd) 1.308(3rd) 1.000(4th) 0.833(5th)

I run a S15 6 speed wth a modified bell housing in my Stanza with a 4.625 diff. Works ok for track use, but maybe too many gears for a Rally car... Very easy to make it fit.

FYI ratios are:
1.000 3.626
2.000 2.200
3.000 1.541
4.000 1.213
5.000 1.000
6.000 0.767

Attached is an image of my bell housing

Sorry to hijack thread but how do they ensure the input shaft is perfectly center when cut and shutting bellhousings?

With one of these. Slightly turned down shiny bits on the right hand side fit into the main bearings of a spare block, the larger round section on the left hand end fits snugly into the input shaft bearing hole in the bellhousing, and the flang-ey looking bit with a notch out bolts inside the bellhousing to keep it square. Small part of L-series bellhousing bolts to back of spare block. Weld it up, all good to go.

It is a nice conversion, you can also get different (ie closer) 1st and 6th gears (from Nismo, or possibly from Toyota IS200 - I have the Toyota ones but yet to fit them to a box) to make a good, cheap-ish close ratio box.

Otherwise, look for a 2.9 first gear zed box. Best you'll find for a factory box. Or a 2000 sports box, fitted with a bellhousing from a very early 240Z box (although that will probably be as hard, or harder, to find than a 1:1 5 speed.

Stew Wilkins will do you an option box, any ratios you want, about $14,000
I have one here, not for sale.
Lurch s doing some very good boxes, the Options, at $6.5k, is very good pricing!
Sometimes he knocks out a good rebuilt 260Z box, around $2k.
These are same ratios as early 240Z, and Datsun Dpirts 2000's, now getting bit hard to find.

Albins can do a 0.890 fifth gear, about $1000
Thats the closest you'll get to a lo-cost direct fifth.
Yes 240K 4 speeds have a better ratio set, no big gap between 2-3 upchange,
I have one of these for sale ----- $200

I can supply, or you talk Japanese, a Kameari Close ratio gearset, at $2100,
for eith the 71B or 71C type boxes.
Mate that, with the 0.89 fifth, and a 4.6 diff, and you have got a budget almost Option box!

You can fit a S13/S14 Sylvia back end into a L bell, or a RB20DET, or a atmo RB30E box!
Much stronger internals. The Close ratio kits fit all those.

MR30 boxes are known as Stumpy's, good for Dato 1600's as stick comes up in stock hole.
Stanza floorpan, you can fit a normal length 71 box.

Thanks for the options guys, I do believe they are well priced, however as much as I would love to have a genuine Competition Option box, I just can't afford them. On top of the stated prices, I would also have transport/import costs.

I will have to look at more options, maybe also play with final drive ratios and wheel sizes.

What gearboxes is most popular with the historic rally guys in Aus/NZ?

From what I gather, the genuine Rally option box, has a 3.321 1st gear.
For my intended purpose, which would also include gymkhana's that seems very low? Or is my reasoning incorrect?

Has anyone tried using a Getrag / ZF 1:1 5th box (BMW)?

So you are saying you want an Option gearbox but don't want to spend the money to buy one? You are dead set goose...

Go find yourself a 260Z gearbox with the 2.9 first gear.

It is not how much I can spend, it is what I can source locally.
The exchange rate, and shipping, does not make importing a gearbox viable.

For AU$9000(i.e. R90000), I can buy a complete running, competitive rally car here.

Unfortunately that isn't the type of car I want, the Datsun bug bit me, and I would like to build this Stanza.

Then you could quite easily buy Australia's most famous, and very original Datsun rally car!
It has the 1:1 direct Option box, along with a heck of a lot more better mechanicals, suspension, a lighter body, than any Stanza, or 240RS!
