Hi

Could anyone tell me more about the Mitsubishi CDI ignition system used on Works Datsun Stanza Rally cars? I only know CDI systems from motorcycles.

Why was a CDI system used?
Was the system supplied by Datsun Competition?
Might there be any other cars running this system?

Which ignition system is now regarded as the best to use on carburetored rally cars?

Regards

These are the part numbers from my rare stanza works tune-up manual (contains all the information to turn a stock stanza into a works stanza including all part numbers and specifications)

Also an option on E10 cherry/N10 Pulsar
22100-A7601 - Distributor Assembly (Common to G2 and G4)
22178-21000 - Support-Distributor (Common to G2 and G4)
22020-M0820 - Amplifier-CDI (Common to G2 and G4, E10 option)
22433-M0820 - Coil-CDI (Common to G2 and G4, E10 option)

Using these part numbers, i found some info in the internet.

"It is similar to aftermarket CDI ignition which can be had for a couple hundred dollars today. "

" A CD ignitor kit is available for use to accomodate the trend toward further high-speed engine performance. It features stabilized spark performance over the entire speed range. Use the same fuel pump, spark plugs, high tension cables as those designated as the primary specification parts. "
(this came from the datsun pulsar option catalog)

I would say electronic ignition would be the new technology, for example a series 2 bluebird distributor.
Or possibly MSD ignition which i believes allows you to adjust ignition advance etc through rev range.

I hope this answers all of your questions

Thanks trav

But have more questions, am a complete noob at ignition systems.

MSD has various systems, is the one you referring to, MSD StreetFire?
I assume you would still need an electronic distributor to work with it?

Would that system provide better, more reliable spark than a points replacement unit like, PerTronix, or modifying an OEM Nissan electronic distributor for use with a carb'ed L20B?
Would you need to upgrade the coil as well?

Not too sure about the different MSD ignition systems.
Personally i would go for a modified series 2 bluebird distributor, you can buy reluctor coils and ignition modules new for them and can also get them regraphed to suit twin webers or other applications.
I think the bluebird dizzy has more potential than a pertronix kit too.
Standard coil and ballast resister need to go, you can replace with a BOSCH HEC715 coil and the wires that were on the ballast go on the coil.
Some people upgrade without changing the coil which is silly because the ballast resists the amount of current and in turn the amount of power going to the dizzy (and the strength of your spark)

The coil & amp are E10 option parts
