Hi All,

With my recent clutch challenges I'm looking to replace it with something a little more meaty. Having said that from day one my gearbox has a slightly crunchy 2nd gear.

Does anyone have recommendations on who can take a look at SR20 gearbox's I'm guessing a freshen up is in order for it. Might as well do it all at once..

Anyone?

Cheers,

Trent

Have you considered upgrading the gearbox? The sr gearboxes aren't very strong so if you are going to chase more power a upgrade could be a good idea. I had a mazda bravo ute gearbox rebuild like 9 years ago and it cost 1500 so it is quite an expensive operation unfortunately haha

Cheers,

Richard

Crunching on down shifts into second is not uncommon with SR & other Nissan transmissions.
Before removing the trans replace the oil. The use of some GL5 oils or universal gearbox/diff oils
will cause this. Especially if the oil contains thio hypoid additive.
Use manual transmission oil only. GL4.
Recently we had a customer asking for a quote to overhaul his SR box due to crunching on down shifts into second.
We changed the oil in the trans. 2 days later He was back in the shop, happy as a pig in sh*t.
Problem solved.

Unless you are smashing gears the sr boxes can handle decent power. There aren't as strong as the vg30 or rb25 boxes but they won't all of a sudden implode as soon as you hit a specific power level.
My S14a had 270rwkw for quite some time and the box was as good when I sold it as it was when I bought it.

Hi All,

I will stick with the SR for the time being. Will try some different oil when the clutch comes out. Got me thinking actually. Does the trans tunnel cover need to come off to get the gearbox out? I really hope not...

Nik: There is track mode and suburban mode driving styles required :)

Cheers,

Trent

No need to remove the transcover. You will need to lift up the gear lever boot.
If you do the job as we do its no big deal. What at first seems the long way is in fact faster.
Will fill you in later.

Thanks Baz,

Can we get to the gear leaver boot from the bottom of the car. It will be impossible from the top without doing some nasty work to the carpet. It's all glued in...

Cheers,

Trent

Yes, but would be extremely hard to get it back in again.

There is another way, just takes a tad longer.
