Hi all, have been looking through this website for some time now and have started building my own 1600. Am thinking of running 17*7 inch wheels so I can clear my brake rotors and calipers up front. was just wondering what width rim people are running on the rear with 17s and also what width and height tyre are they running. I know offset will play a crucial role but just want to know if I can fit 225/45/17 or 245/40/17s. If so if I could please get a hand from the well knowledged people within this site and steer me in the right direction of what offset wheels etc I will need for these wider rear wheels to fit and be practicle. Thank you everyone, have tried using the search bar but haven't been able to find much so far.

You can make anything fit.
Just depends on how much modification you want to perform.
The 225's and 245's are pretty wide and you would need 8" wide wheels to fit this rubber.
To get this width on the front will require flares and modification to the strut. (coil over etc.) The rear, I think the most you can run without flares or tubs or modification is approx 215 maybe a 225. 245's will require a fair bit of stuffing around and cutting up the rear and flaring the rear guard.
As for offset, well, perhaps find out whether you want to flare first and we can go from there...
17x7s typically require an offset of approx 38-40ish (if running Datsport struts) and you can run approximately 30+ on the rear. This is running 205 rubber though....

Thank you for your reply sr20datsun. as for the front tyres I was looking to run 205s max but as for the rear I was looking to run a bit wider without flaring or anything like that. I kinda wanna keep the factory external shape of the 1600 as factory as possible. do u have any links or more info on the work involved to make 235s fit under the rear. ill be running the datsport adjustable rear x member, r200 lsd, custom half shafts and r31 brakes on the rear. Im just trying to get a bit of a picture in my head and want to purchase wheels, im trying to fit some wheels with a bit of dish, if I have to go custom wheels I will, but without tubbing the rear I want to get some wide rear on the deck to get some power down.

if you really want to do the rears without flares then it can be done to accept 8" rims. mates have done it by notching the rear a-arms and modifying the inner guard to allow the tyre to come out and rim to move further in.

is it worth it? probably not.
the extra rubber on the road isn't much. plus you have to contend with negative camber and toe changes under squat/load.
focus on good tyres and wheel angles first.
plenty of guys making big power with smaller wheels with good traction.

Thank you rjb510. Do you know how much wider tires they were able to fit with doing this? I'm just starting to build a 71 1600. Motor will be making around 550hp at the wheels and just trying to work out the best rim and Tyre selection to put this type of power down. I am also limiting myself because I am running r33 brakes up front and r31 on the rear. Will probably look for a nice set of 16s. Thanks for the input everyone also if anyone else has some ideas if they could let me know. Not looking to flare the guards if I can or go tubbed. Wanna try to just keep as is. Have a r200 lsd also :). Will be starting a build thread soon if I have time. But will c how I go.

No idea on tyre width mate.
Seriously though, if you're planning on doing it, might be best to borrow an 8" wheel and tyre and mock fit it once your rear end is installed to see what kind of modifications are required to make them fit.

I would look at DATO4's build thread on this forum, he's making big power and has big tyres to suit.
