i have a 1970 1600 L20B

with clutch engaged and a blip of the accelerator at 1500 RPM a horrible grinding noise
erupts from the bell housing, then when the clutch is disengaged the grinding noise stops.

this noise has effect while in gear and in neutral.

has anyone else experienced this?

Have you had the car running and driving and this has started happening, or have you up everything together and it's done it? The reason I ask is that I had a problem that sounds very similar to yours when I did a manual conversion on my Hilux, the problem ended up being that the flywheel bolts were too long. I couldn't hear them rubbing against the engine but when I put my foot on the clutch I could.

Clutch engaged = foot off pedal
Clutch disengaged = foot ON the pedal

In neutral , clutch engaged. Could potentially be bearing input shaft bearing
In neutral , clutch disengaged. Could potentially be throw out bearing

Either way gearbox comes out and problem will be pretty obvious if noise is that bad. Check clutch disk thickness and ensure rivots aren't grinding on flywheel aswell.

thankyou for your help, I have a new clutch kit ready but I will have a good look at the mechanical clearance in relation to the clutch and flywheel. to see if any rivets or bolts are binding up on a metal surface. as well as inspect throw out brng. thanks
