Hi Made some progress over the last couple of weeks Got my r31 struts back from Wilkins Motorsport. Originally was going to just replace the perished bump stops but decided to go the whole hog and get a coil over setup with the camber plates. OG Datsport r31 struts Attachment:

Engine in/ suspension installed with all new bushes. The painter installed the engine/suspension for me as he has a car hoist so he could just lower the car over engine which lowered the risk of scratching expensive paintwork, defiantly the best way to do it. Attachment:

Also got my parts back from the chromer. It took a while and it stopped me from being able to install engine earlier as I had my metal engine mount brackets chromed but it was worth the wait, they did a excellent job.Should look good on the black paintwork. Will be fitting all the new chrome parts soon and the painter is going to start putting on the body panels like the fenders, bonnet etc Attachment:

Thanks Mate hows your car going?Thought I'd share what's going on with the rear of the car. When I was getting the engine rebuilt I also decided I wanted to run e85. I was original going to use the factory tank as I had already had done the r31 in tank conversion and was just going to switch to a walbro e85 pump, but was worried about having the fuel sitting in the steel tank and rusting. So I went with an ATL 60L e85 compatible fuel cell as it had the closest measurements to the factory tank and I wanted to be able to sit it in the factory position. I also found this inbuilt e85 safe Anodized aluminium surge tank set up made for the ATL fuel cell. It has a carter pump which feeds two pumps inside the the surge tank. I also bought a stainless swirl pot that has check valves for cornering which meant I could also remove the fuel cell foam. I also had to purchase a fuel sender which screws on to the fill plate and by the time I also bought teflon fuel line, speedflow fittings and stainless hard lines I defiantly didn't want to add up the receipts haha. Like most of us on here once you start something on these cars you can't stop, you loose if you try to resell the stuff too but i defiantly could of used the money on something else on the car. Soon as I got the fuel cell I began trying to work out how i was going to mount. I knew the car would need some modification to fit it in the factory position as its was a little to wide but the next size down width wise only held 30 litres. The fuel cell fitted perfect in between the strut towers but the width was defiantly going to be a problem as it stopped me from able to put the spare in the wheel well. The only way to fix the problem was to lift the the fuel cell up stupidly high but then there wouldn't be enough fall on the filler or even worse fit the idea of a having great handling Datsun 1600. As the car is at the painters I had discussed it with him and we went over a couple of different ideas. We worked out there was not going to be any easier way to keep the fuel cell low and also save the spare wheel well. So this it what we came up with. Its probably not everyone cup of tea but its functional now. Plenty of fall for the fuel filler and sits a lot lower and you cant see the wheel has been modified from the back of car. The scissor jack mount has been moved to the back of wheel well. The battery is going to be mounted behind back seat and the spare wheel is going to be mounted horizontal in the right hand side quarter panel. It will hover a bit over fuel cell and will be braced. It will only be in car for engineering and when the car is taken on long trips. I'll take some photos when it finished. All the work was carried out by the painter Jonathan at vmg. Hi Fellas Update The steering idle arm bushes were perished so I got Wilkins Motorsport to make up some brass bushings. These should hold up better to the heat coming off the turbo and exhaust. Attachment:

A lot more room between motor and radiator.

Hey mate,
Thanks mateNice work! Where did you get the radiator from? Cheers, Trent I bought it of Graig of maddat when i first bought my 1600 like 13 years ago. It came as a intercooler/radiator combo with the the intercooler bolted in by a top and bottom plate welded on the radiator. It also has twin davies craig thermo fans. The top plate has been modified by the painter now to make it sit lower. It fits really well in a 1600 with an sr20 dont know how it peforms under abuse as i've yet to use it haha. But the same setup was used in a weekend race car a long time ago you might remember it, it was in a cream 1600 with a p510 sticker on the front doors. Ill get some measurement up and photos as it might help people in the future. Thanks Tim |

pphh your car is going to be more unique than any 1600 car on this forum 4 door to 2 door and all done by yourself doesn't get better than that. Will defiantly be driven around the shire, I'm hoping to have it finished for a car day at kurnell in February. When I get the car back to the yard ill let you know should come around and see what you think. Let me know if you need any bits and pieces for your car(bolts, dash bits, trims, lenses). I've also got a few other things like a r180 diff 3.9 ratio, standard front seats, uncut complete datsun 1600 wiring loom. Thanks tim |

Hi A lot of things have been happening with the car lately just most haven't been completed. haha The surge tanks filler neck diameter was different to the original fill pipe. So we decided to use the filler cap that came with the filler neck and machine it down so we could weld on a machined 2/1 inch ring section to it. A stainless ring was also made up to be welded on to the filler pipe so they were both uniform. Jonathan at VMG did all the machining and tig welding. Attachment:

Finished product all tig'd up.

An earls fitting that Jonathan had was machined down and used for the breather pipe.

Ive also attacked finishing the dash so it can be wired up Also gone a different way with the dash cant stand working with filler/fibreglass haha. Decided to go with a metal section for the driver side and wont be using any tacos just the digital dash. The idea is to replicate the original plastic dash but just in sheet metal. First i made up a template from timber of the original dash piece Attachment:
Attachment:
I then had it bent up at a sheet metal place
Attachment:
Attachment:
Cut out the side sections of the dash and tacked it up.Also cut section out for the digital dash.

I've nearly finished it now and ill take some more photos this weekendthanks Tim |
