Hey guys I've got a couple in the shed i'll be going through first. But in my opinion it's the only weak link of my driveline. Cars going to have fats on it most the time probably mickeys or hercules. Just how glass are the gear boxes? Do they break gears or kill synchro's? They're not dog legs they're just the over drive 5 speeds. I don't have any spare ca18 gearboxes left but if it gets to that I'll consider the swap is the lent over shifter angle a real pain in the arse or no big deal?

Assuming they aren't 180B SSS or Stanza boxes (since they aren't dogleg), they will most likely be "71B" style boxes. Same boxes as fitted to most Datsuns of the era - both 4 & 6 cylinder. Virtually the same box as the CA18. Should be plenty strong enough.

Awesome news ones from an 810 one was in my 180b. Motor will only have 180-200 atw but thinking about 245/50/14's n I know the r200s up for it just wasn't sure on box. So same story as a ca18 box they die from thrashing more then power?

thanks man! so their is a fair difference between a c and a b but honestly i don't know if it'll make more then then 250ft/lb as it is. I haven't seen an engine dyno or really any roller dyno figures for my sort of set up but I'm really hoping for about 180rwhp. which i'm assuming will be under or dead on the 250 ft lb mark? Definitely worth killing the two i've got to find out and force upgrading anyway.

Yeah, you should be ok. Thats the approach ive taken aswell.
To keep it simple i just fitted the best condition gearbox from the latest model datsun that i could find (280zx) to my own turbo L20B.
I havnt taken mine to the drags but have done some stupid launches in second gear with it on the street at full noise and the box only seems to not like shifting quickly at high rpm as they all do.
Theres info on here somewhere about adapting the later nissan Fj20,SR20,RB20 boxes if you do have any troubles later on.
I'd be looking more at other potentially weak things in your driveline like your uni's etc if you havnt done so already.
If youre thinking of drag racing a bit id look at getting some cv axles if youve currently got halfshafts and even consider upsizing the tailshaft and its uni's aswell if you get serious...

i'm unsure on the uni's condition but they're not bust and the diff was behind a vg30 turbo 1600. And the tailshaft is one piece hence assuming my weak points my gearbox at the moment. Did you go efi on your l20b? For years i've not wanted to and most my kit would be useless if i did but a little piece of me is saying to do it. But i've got newer faster efi turbo nissans and it's like well if you go efi why not ca or fj. And the other half of me says keep it period correct and fun why make all your cars go the same n just look different. Hard decision lol.

Yeah mines efi. Cost more than a twincam to do properly and doesn't have as much power potential as one but makes up for it in originality, looks and nostalgic value... ;)

Yeah I'm unsure if the efi nostalgia is what I want or if the dcoe draw through sounding like an elephant draining a bath tub will suffice. i've got a steam pipe one piece intake/ exhaust manifold with a t4 foot printed air research turbo similar to a 2860 running external gate. Motors a pretty good one too L18W 44mm intake ports, big exhaust ports, 280zx turbo valves and a ground cam. So I'm hoping with 10-12 psi and water injection it'll make 180hp but i really don't know as i've never worked an l series or a turbo carby set up.

I'm putting around 300 fly hp ( 230 rwhp) through a B type box, in a rally car, that gets its wheels up in the air,
And around 270 fly hp, through a B box in a circuit car, biggest issue is keeping synchros healthy.
An upgrade wouod be to a C type box, as all gears are 2mm wider, mainshaft is 1mm bigger diam, selector forks are better supported.
After that, then go for an RB25 type box
