What's everyone do to get all the slack out of the chain instead of using cam tower shims.

There still a little meat left on the chain guide to extend the elongated bolt holes both top and bottom to get a bit more tension from the chain out of the curved guide.

Cam tower shims are required to correct the cam timing when the head has been faced.
They raise the cam shaft [and therefore sprocket] to crankshaft distance, back to factory specs. so the OEM cam chain, tensioner and guides can work as designed.

Rather not stuff around with shims, I'll have to redo lash pads then won't I??
No prob with cam timing I've got an adjustable cam gear I can set that up with the degree wheel on reassembly.
I just want to get the chain as tight as I can.

Drill & tap new thread in block. Reshape the guide to fit the chain.
If it is a small amount file the slot in the guide.

Where should you drill a new hole?
Next to the Top hole of the mount or the bottom hole?

At the top, drill no deeper than existing hole.

I notice if I used a differernt brand tensioner sometimes than the one supllied in the kit I could get a tighter chain so the shoe is butted against the housing. then adjust at the top slack side guid but its not a lot of tension just enuff to get the lower tensioner shoe to but up on the housing.

just skip to find when Im doing a tensioner timming set.

some slot the slack side guides also and even the tensioner housing.

F elongating the mount holes in the curved guide, fill in the old position with a dab of weld, then file hole to suit bolt thread diam.
A slapping chain can knck the guide back.

Also the oil tensioner plunger blck can be carefully filed to mve it further "inboard, this helps to stop the plunger blck possibly cocking in the bore.
Use a half a roll pin slipped into the filed hole, to ensure block does not get pushed back
