Anyone know this car. I'm keen to jump back in. Keen on an old school road/track car stuffed with Datsport bits and Les Collins NA engine instead of SR

http://lescollinsracing.com/engine/proj ... bdka-racer

Some might say I'm mad but I am intending to sell my 2002 Porsche 996 GT2 and get back into a Datto that I can punt around in and not worry about value/risk of damage. Also in my GT2 the speeds on track are very high and so the risks much higher. In my old 13B Datsun 1600 that cost me bugger all, I had great fun passing much more expensive machinery. cheap and fast is just as much fun!

Welcome back! good to hear you want another datto race/road car.

Don't know that exact car, but I would hope it has a great body for that price.

Best to call Les directly for prices. He is great to deal with.
Don't expect it to be cheap, Les does things properly the first time
He can just build you an engine, or prepare a full car for you.
He has some tricks with the 1600 rear end that make them much faster on the bitumen

My engine les built below is simply amazing to drive

Niiiice engine.

14k is a lot of coin for a 1600 L series. I have a mate that I helped to buy one back in uni days early 90s and he still has it in a barn in Warragul so that could be another option and close to les... ! I think his kids are keen on keeping it though.

14K is a bit but if there is no rust and that engine is running well then it would definitely be worth it

We're well onto the wrong side of $25K on our rebuild and we had a pretty good base to start with

Enquired on the $14.5k green 1600, sounds a bit exxy - was in storage a while and still has some rust in rear quarters.

A little birdy told me legend Les would want 30-40k to build a twin cam L series including Motec and ITBs.......and I thought Porsche engines cost a lot of coin!

What's the ozdat view of this one instead, probably better value, body looks good, painted (I like the colour) and sr20det done. Been on market a while, anyone checked it out? 18k is still up there but you'd pay 10 ish for a decent starting point now.

https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... AD-3304211

Sort out the grille/inter cooler, throw some decent wheels on it and tidy up inside and you'd have a decent car?

Looks like a nice car. Shame about the cut front end.
Love the colour

This is a great car, if you want a full racecar. It is listed by brad, he frequents these forums a bit.
http://www.my105.com/ListingDetails/p/1 ... n/id/15509

does amazingly fast times at barbagallo raceway. I would say its the fastest 1600 in the country atm
Good price aswell
I think he lists it with the option of selling without the powertrain

^^ yeah I know that car. Used to be a similar car in Vic years ago, Nissco livery I think.

I'd prefer an original body/look and accept that's not the fastest way around a track. Not a fan of the big wheels and big wing that chasing lap times requires. I'd be happier with a road/track compromise, able to club reg and enjoy on weekends as well as punt relatively quickly on track. I like the idea of a bespoke Les Collins drivetrain but an SR20T offers great bang for buck.

That's not a bad compromise and pretty cheap too.

Welcome back by the way, I remember you being kind enough to take me for a lap in your 13B 1600 years ago. That was good fun. A friend sent me a picture of your car recently which he saw at Winton.

Doug, Les has KA>L-series conversion kit's in stock if you want to build a motor yourself...

If not, give him a call. He'll soon tell you the info & cost for what you want.

If you will consider a project and travel to sydney. My friend has an engineered (in nsw) sr20det 1600 that requires panel work and paint, but has all running gear in the car and rolling - $5k

Interior still in the car as well. PM me your email address and I can forward the details if you are interested.

If I had a garage it would be at my place already.

Thanks Lurch. dont want to waste Les' time with another "kick the tyres" call. I knew his engines would be expensive and figures someone told me are well beyond what I'd be prepared to spend on a 1600. And i I don't have time, skill or tools to build myself.

I'll keep looking. Typically project cars sell for a lot less than the cost of the build. I would t be building a car myself anyway so for me it will be an expensive process. better to buy someone else's hard work although it'll be a while before the right car pops up I suspect. No rush.....

Cost to buy and build a clean fast Datto was getting a bit crazy. So I changed direction and bought this for track duty. 1050kg and 450 rwhp turbo injected Bridgeport. I couldn't build anything like this for double the coin.

By the way I'm told my car does 62s at barbagallo and similar cars are into 61s, which compares well with the 62s by the 1600 in WA referred to by Lampy above. And the RX cost me well under $20k. Bought it sight unseen, arrives from Perth next week so hopefully it's as good as it sounds!

Adios until next time I get the Datto itch. Cheers.

thats surprising for a rotary race car as the engines are now costing a fortune to rebuild
so under 20k for a car that sells for 30k in jpn is a good choice all setup as you need.
I suppose people are sick of spending too much on rebuilds to get rid of them for these prices.

I had a race ep 12a turbo setup on my R100 sometime back it was running microcrap ecu
with hybrid T04B but suffered little from Lag and idle was smooth as silk through its paces
compared to a almost identical setup of my neighbour's Rx3 to the engine in the link below
http://www.ausrotary.com/viewtopic.php?t=60707

My last setup was a race BP 13b with 51ida but prefer any day an EP for NA or boost
as the horrible idling curdles the blood and stresses the body after an hour of driving

good luck

7-8k seems to be the going price for a quality rebuild. PO sold it because he bought a series 6 race car instead. I've had bridgeports so no drama there especially as it won't be road driven. Performance similar to this....fun.
