Just a quick one regarding the above seal, getting some mixed responses.

I removed the old seal yesterday, fitted a new one by using the old seal as a drift and tapping it in with a hammer (lubed it up with the old trans oil before installing). It seems to have bottomed out with a couple of mm of seal protruding from it's housing. Is that normal? I'm hearing mixed responses, some say it has to be flush, while I've also heard that some seals stick out a bit.

I won't be touching the car for a few more days, so before I try to tap it in further (except using a socket instead of the old seal) I thought I might as well ask the question.

Pic for reference:

cheers

I'm trying to work slower and smarter these days, but unfortunately that's one thing I didn't do!

I had an hour spare this morning and gave it another shot using a socket, but the biggest one I had was just slightly bigger than the I.D. of the seal, so it didn't work. Ended up finding a roll of electrical tape that was the perfect size and it worked a treat! It's in all the way now.
