Hi

wondering if anyone could help me determine this grinding noise i have generating through my L-series 5 speed gearbox
with out me dismantling gearbox completely.

clutch disengaged (clutch Pedal pressed) regardless of in neutral or in gear a metal on metal grinding noise generates rapidly
and does not stop until clutch engaged.

i have inspected flywheel for any obvious signs of burring or protrusions
friction plate has plenty of material with no exposed rivets
no bent or cracked diaphragm fingers and all are in tact
thrust bearing spins freely with no damage.
*this has eliminated anything clutch related
*input shaft bearing i suspect has failed but not certain

any help is appreciated
Jake

By pushing on the clutch pedal you stop the gear movement in the gearbox, so forget about the gearbox being the problem. Spigot bush/bearing in the rear of the crankshaft or thrust bearing when under load noisy. Over throw of the clutch fork/pressure plate fingers hitting clutch plate? Hardening off the front of the spigot gear. Bob.

Did you change anything before this sound started happening?

As previously mentioned, look at the clutch fork and that the flywheel and bolts for the clutch are in correctly. Sounds more like a thrust bearing, clutch fork or pressure plate grinding on the bolts that have been incorrectly installed...
