Hey guy's Just purchased a 1600 sedan it's my second datsun.

I had a 1200 ute a couple years ago and before that I've owned 3 Holden Gemini's one of which I spent ridiculous amounts of money on and never got to drive the thing before I sold it on and moved states due to work.

According to the previous owner it has:

-L20b engine with twin webbers
- 5spd 240k (dogleg?) gearbox
-240k front struts and brakes
- 4.11 200b coupe diff

As I'm a complete newb when it comes to these cars. I'm not sure why it has a 200b diff in it. I can only assume it is stronger and has a more desirable ratio? Do these diffs bolt straight in or would something had to of been modified? I'm just trying to understand more about what has been done to the car.

In about 10 months I'll be moving back to WA from SA and I am planning on doing the SR20DET conversion respraying it and getting it fully engineered.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend what diff to use when doing the conversion, I think WA might be a bit stricter on what mods you can do over there. I've seen people use the R180, R200, Hilux diffs and R31 diffs. I know when it comes to Gemini's the diff conversion was the biggest dilemma.

Being that I intend to run a fairly stock engine for street use to begin with and maybe doing some mild upgrades like bigger turbo larger injectors (money permitting). What diff is best to use? I think one that requires the least amount of modification would be best when it comes to ease of getting an engineer to sign off on it...

My plan is to purchase all the conversion kit, diff setup, suspension brake's etc from one of the Dat shops here in SA and bring it all back to WA with me , because the Army will pay for my uplift when I relocate to WA ;).

Sorry for the long winded post but any info and advice you guys could give me would be great.

P.S is there any SA Datto owners here that go on Cruises? I'm keen to tag along !

Very nice mate, looks super neat. Most people go for the R180 or R200 diff. Hilux or R31 are both live axle, the 1600 is IRS.

Yeah it looks good, nice score  are they original seats? If so I vote you keep them!

Auto 200B SSSs came with an R160 diff with a 4.11:1 ratio, so the diff was most likely fitted for that reason (someone correct me if I am wrong but I think the standard 1600 ratio is 3.9). Also if it is a dogleg gearbox it will be from a Stanza SSS if it is short, or either a 180B SSS or 200B SSS if it is long.

looks like it would be a shame to put a SR in it - sounds like a really nice little 1600 with the L series in it

Nice clean car ---wonder where that was hiding around Adelaide .
If going SR later , then the R200 ideal. If fitted correctly . What half shafts were used ??? Then the only change will be tail shaft shortened , which will be much cheaper than playing around with rear end . Keep an eye on ebay for tail shaft . Cruise what side of town are you located
Green200b correct with dogleg box assumption also . Very early skylines (2.4ltr fuel injected ) had conventional 5 speed box called stumpy , if you can find one ideal for L20 w/- twin webbers . No change to tail shaft and very very strong box . Well mine is anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys. I haven't taken it for one drive without having someone give me a smile and a wave. It certainly turns heads, just like my old Gemini wagon did.

Thanks for the info on the gearbox and diff.

I think they are stock seats, they are comfy enough anyway so I have no need to swap them out!

I'm not sure on the half shafts. Are half shafts the axles? It has 240k front struts and brakes so does that mean it would have 240k hubs as well? maybe the rear ones are 240k to match the front?

Very nice looking unit.
My suggestion is to visit the members ride section and see what everyone else is running and their recommendation (this would include fitting kits etc.)
For street use the R180 is fine. Usually the pinion gears shear or play up, so the fitment of an LSD is important.

Looks like a great start. Couldn't convince you to keep it an L series?

Haha I don't think so at this stage. I have always wanted to own a turbo steel bumper and my last project never got finished. The current owner has turned it into the best Gemini coupe in Perth at the moment and it hurts seeing pictures of it finished on facebook!

Sorry wrong side of town for cruise . It's a cut lunch and water bag job to get out there . Live southern side of town . There are a few guys that side of town with 1600's that could be interested . Also try Adelaide Datsun Club on Facebook , worth a try .
