I'm trying to find some information about the thickness of the surface hardening of the R180 and R200 crown wheel and pinions.
I have recently had my CW&P lapped and was wondering how much material can be removed before the hardness drops away to nothing.
I spoke to Stewart Wilkins recently and asked the question and he suggested the Borg-Warner gear sets had deeper hardness than the Japanese stuff, but couldn't remember what the difference was.

Does anyone know how much material a typical lapping process removes?

It depends on the grade the original parts material as well as heat treating process. I would have guessed around 1mm deep from the surface but this is just a guess.
As for lapping, this process is only used too take minimal amounts of material off so unless your set already had substantial wear I wouldn't be too worried about thinning your hardened layer too much

Thanks for the reply Chris.
I thought this was the case, but would like to get some numbers around it just to get an idea of what is involved.
