Did we lose a diff thread last night?

It was started by SR20Datsun I think and discussed issues with his Quaife R200.

A mate has had similar issues with a noisy Torsen R180 so I was interested to read the results

It does look like it. I certainly replied to that thread.

SR20Datsun has temporarily taken that thread offline as he is trying to get the shop to repair it. If they don't play ball, I expect it will be back with some updated comments.

Completely understand that, hopefully he can share the findings which may help other people with similar issues

Yep, that's the reason it's been temporarily moved. I'm speaking to said diff place to try and figure out what's going on.
Watch the empty space where the posts were made. Hopefully a positive outcome.
Turbo510, i'm interested in your friends R180. Can you detail the noises and the outcomes?

Similar to what you described, almost like a suss cv but his car still runs Uni's.

Seems to run really hot as well even with a slight overfill (rear end jacked as high as it will go to fill it)

Always has a bit of metal paste on the drain plug too.

His is a Modena (Amax) torsen.

I've always run clutch pack diffs in my 1600's as I prefer the way they drive and I have never had a problem

Running hot is usually a function of the crownwheel and pinion mesh. They are the surfaces that make the most contact at speed under load and decel. I ran a differential with a Torsen from Modena (Amax) for a while and it started to get noisy, but I have a feeling that was due to oil coming out the breather and the CW&P getting a little bit warm down sandown...
There is a distinct clunk when you go from reverse to 1st for example, but that is just the LSD internal backlash. Some would say a little quieter than a clutch pack and slow manoeuvres.
The clutch pack diffs have a 'delay' in locking and if you are running them in the wet for example, they lock quicker which is kind of exactly not what you want to happen if you don't want oversteer.
OS-Giken diffs are more progressive and are certainly quieter, but you have to deal with Otomoto, which stopped me.

My mates Torsen r180 runs an extended breather so it definitely is not throwing oil out.

I've done a lot of track time with Torsen diffs, both in my mates 1600 and my turbo MX5.

I definitely prefer a clutch pack, they suit my driving style better and I am quicker with a clutch pack diff wet or dry.

I also hate the way a torsen will run open if you lift a wheel, it was quite bad with the MX5, and how you can feel it transferring the power side to side.

Torsen's are ok in a road car if you can't get a clutch pack, but give me a clutch pack or a spool in a track car any day.
