Post subject:  Datsun 1600 chassis stiffening

Hi all,
Im currently in the process of building a 1600 specifically for classic tarmac rallying and wanted people's thoughts on what areas of the chassis (if any) should be stiffened by means of stitch welding or plating. I what to get this completed prior to the car going to paint.
Points to note: This is note a road car. I have already installed a full cams approved tarmac cage ( see attached photos) therefore the chassis is already very stiff. Just really looking to strengthen any areas of weakness.

Cheers,

Nathan

You know sometimes you strengthen one part and put undue stress some where else. That is what is my concern.I saw a works rally Datsun in the late 70's and a lot of the reinforcement was fabricated sheet metal not tubes. There were a few reinforcing ribs pressed into components and various folds to make parts. This actually looked like what one would expect from standard manufacturing techniques of the period. All extra reinforcement looked intentional not an after thought.I suppose if you had sheet metal equiptment available than that's what one would use.Looked real neat .My previous 4 Dattos developed cracks and I put it down to metal fatigue but on hind sight they were repairable.I am tempted to fabricate heavy gauge sheet metal reinforcement components for my car.No seam welding but I will double up on spot welds. That special spot weld drill bit can be made from a standard drill ,just do a sheet metal grind profile on one.

Hi DatsEZ,
Check out the links I have put in above.
It's to reinforce areas that typically have issues on our cars based on owners previous experience.
