Hi everyone,

My name is Jace and here is my build thread on my datto.

Ive introduced myself here http://ozdat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f= ... 94#p264594

I bought, or should I say rescued, my datto from a shed that it was sitting in for the best part of 9 years.

It has been a backyard job in nearly every aspect, so my intial goals are to fix, repair, and get it neat.

Engine wise it has the z18et, which I'm liking more and more. The owner had no idea about it, apart from it being cammed.
Im more focused in the rest of the car for now, I will attack the engine more once the rest of the car is done.

Here a some photos the previous owner took. He also was kind enough to tow it home for me for a few bucks.

Ok, so here is what I have done so far;

- neatened the blue octopus legs
- installed pod filter
-installed overflow bottle
- re mounted IC higher and so it will be behind the grill
- custom autometer dash :)
- ordered a hundred million parts, bits and pieces (alot still to be installed)
- and grabbed my auto sparky mate to trouble shoot my blinkers and get them working

Apart from that and while waiting for parts, I have also been sanding and doing some bogging in places, and lucky for me I got onto the bloke who sprayed it and found out the colour!

Microtech ecu?

No I haven't come across any purple under it. Original colour is actually light blue, same as my old mans back in the day. I was thinking of trying to trace its history some how to see if it were his.
It would be a long shot but I should try.

Yea it has a micro tech mt4 with the hand controller.

It's been resprayed 2 years ago, but not that perfect. I'm happy with it for now, I'm just so keen to get it on the road! Plus it will be fine for a while.

Only rust I've found is some little bubbles around the lower rear gaurds and a bad area in the corner under the fuse box.

Interior wise I'm going to retrim/replace carpet, roof lining and door cards etc.

But yea not sure the look they were going, but definately getting rid of that horrid fb bonnet!
And new wheels. :)

It needs a tune, so hopefully this weekend it will get done. Gotta tow it up to Canberra.

Well I have a update on what's been happening....

Lots of minor problems!

The mechanic I chose in Canberra was recommended by a friend who he regulary deals with,
a time was made to be booked in for a tune and the mechanic was kind enough to pick it up for me after a rally event he had down the coast.

So...

Things that have arisen, (these all were fixed because the microtech was reading way out)

- the motor needed 17% more fuel? Fixed
- temp was reading 145 degrees, fixed
- revs were reading 13 500, fixed with new part for coil and new ignition
- bleed valve was melted internally, fixed with new boost controller

And now as the final tune was about to happen, they noticed coolant around water pump.

Turns out it's stuffed and he is going to modify a new one to fit this ancient piece of motor.
And acess is terrible as I have just moved my radiator and thermos back to fit the front mount behind the stock grill!!

The car has been there 3 weeks going on 4.

It's **** doing my head in, I want it back lol

Side note.

Not once have I had a phone call to let me know how things were going.

So I've been ringing for updates, naturally and to see how much I'm up for.

The worker there said the boss is busy I'll tell him to ring you back. Never got any calls back.

So... I rang again. After this went on 3 times, today the boss answered and he got the shits at me for ringing too much!!

So I told him what's been happening and turns out old mate not once passed on the call back message...

I would assume the water pump should be the same as an L series one if a Z series isn't available. But surely you can still look up a Z20 nissan engine and get a part code.

Maybe drop in there or offer to obtain parts if they need you to get a water pump etc.

I know right, I said could I source one, because I knew I would be able to find out from this forum.

He said, well I've got 30 years working on these jap engines and I've already spoken to someone and worked out a plan for my motor.

To avoid further Issues with him I just said fine, just do it.

I know it's in good hands, he has a great reputation, I guess some guys are just set in their ways...

Ok thanks.
So are you telling me that I can use that pump which costs about $40, will be a direct fit, no modifications needed?
