I have installed new window felt and door seals to my Datsun 1600 a few years back, the car has been in storage as I have been working away. When I got it out of the shed recently to take it for a cruise I noticed wind noise coming from the front doors starting around 80km/h. Is this common in these cars? I would of expected it at higher speeds, say 140. The seals are seem still like new. I can't seem to work out where he noise is exactly coming from. As I said is this a common thing?

First question: Have you eaten a curry lately?

The gutter design around the doors can be a source of wind noise.

Nissanman, I don't mind a good Indian curry but no that is not the source. Would you say this gutters would make wind noise at 80km/h?

Do any of you other guys with 1600s have the wind noise after a quality resto with all new seals?

Get some masking tape, tape where you think the noise is coming from and see if it goes away

I have experienced this. There is a leak somewhere in the rubber around the door. I wouldn't think it's the door window felt.
There will be a leak where seal meets (or doesn't meet!) the chassis frame.
You do get a bit of wind noise in general, but sometimes if you don't put the seals in correctly, it will leak.

Thanks for all the replies.

Stowers, I will try the masking tape around the windows first

SR20Datsun, if the window felt is okay after I try the masking tape, I will look at removing the door seals and might fit new ones. How did you rectify your leak?

I don't know whether you need to remove the door seals, you just need to find where it isn't contacting correctly. Usually if you are following where the seal is inserted around the top of the door, you should be right. There is a bit of a wiggle where the A-pillar meets the top of the door skin. This is potentially where it could be 'leaking'. There may be some other areas too. The only way would be to find out whether the seal is touching/being compressed when the door is closed. Perhaps by smearing some grease on the rubber seal to find out whether it is touching the door opening?

I ended up finding a small area that wasn't touching and moved the seal in that area. I inserted some foam to test first.

You can use a credit card or business card to slide around the door: you will feel resistance where is touches and freedom where it doesn't.
Another possible source of wind noise is the wipers.
Later models went to the wire type wiper arms because the solid ones were noisy

My wife had a Gemini coupe years ago and it gave off a whistling noise near the doors and we just could not figure out what it was causing it.It later turned out to be the screw holes mounting the door mirrors .We did a quick fix with some blue tack and problem solved.Me personally like my datto's loud with that that awesome Webber sound.I never had any of my Datsuns quiet enough to hear any wind noise. The 3 box body design was never renowned as a very aero dynamic design.Just look carefully for the smallest divot or protrusion and try to illuminate a possable cause one by one.Good luck.
