First of all welcome myself to the forum.

I'm doing a planned upgrade on my CA18DET after a few years of neglect.

Basically it ran el-cheapo set up:
Z32 AFM
440 injectors
T28 (ADM s14) turbo
3" exhaust
exhaust cam on intake side
Nistune ran 17PSI with 190kw at the wheels for some time.

Started running in some issues like valve float, head bolts stratch, turbine wheel contact with housing, not enough power. The regular problems

Anyways. Now replaceing a turbo of a similar specs to 2871R or something smaller. Havent decided yet. But has to bolt on my set up
Cylinder head is fully reconditioned all acid bath, pressure test, ultrasound, valve seats, guides and seals, new springs. It's practicaklly brand new.

The general Idea I pursue is very quick spool and power 200-220kw at the wheels on 98 V-Power. Hence smallish turbo choice

Now the question is for the cams. Currently its stock 248. I was eyeing Tomei 256 cams. Got a few second opinions with unanimous recommendation to go 260.

Now whats the deal with staggered 256 intake and 260 exhaust??? I dont want to lose any spool up time. It has to spool quickly.

I've been doing some research too. Lets see what the experts have to say.

Cool, thanks. I've grown up on two strokes and carby is like my childhood best friend. Actually researched quad carb ca18 build in NA form. but thats another hi compression project in dat chassis.

Just cannot find much on staggered cams. BTW settled on JDM T28 BB for now. cos of budget

If you are staying with the JDM T28, I'd stick to something close to factory. The 256 would be the largest (non staggered) I personally would go unless you want to loose a heap of response down low, but gain a heap up top...

I agree with Nik. Would choose the 256 cams. The smaller turbo will help your spool but with a t28 you'll still get a little bit of lag on the 1.8l. Good tune and an electronic boost controller will help that though.

I've got greddy electronic boost controller. Also upgraded throttle body to a larger 60mm of sr20de auto. Installing 550 injectors because 440 pretty much maxed out on final dyno run. This thing is expected to get to 220kw

Found this option of regrinding cams by cam tech in Caringbah. Will probably get close to 256 duration and increase in lift a bit. New springs going in as well. Heard mixed feedback of regrind cams. But should be ok on mild change. Half the price of Tomei. Also no one has tomei in stock in 256.

Maybe ask Camtech what they recommend? I had a reground cam from Camtech in my old L series datsun. Had no issues at all. Why would it be any different for a CA. They build up and regrind the lobes. Not the shaft itself. I can't see it having any more problems than a standard camshaft and those guy's are pretty good.
260 will give you more midrange and top end, but given that you want the low response, then bigger cams will stifle that a little.

Regrind can pose problem when made too aggressive or done wrong. They take off material from base and sides of cam leavong lobe the same. Then you gotta shim lifters. HLs will self adjust. that way you get more lift and duration. If done too aggressive lobe can be hammering lifters a bit to harsh on higher revs. But 256 is only a tiny regrind from 248.

I have 264 hks in my de+t it hasnt been tuned yet wiyh 2876 so cant comment on that.

But... my cams were last in a det arp bolts mls hg. It ran a 2871 with boost lower then its efficiency range. Itd start spooling at 3700 all in at a bar at 4500. .6 front .63 rear.

A cheap reliable option is td05 big 16g.

Sr20 rear housing is 220, i buily a wastegate bracket and shaved the front housing. I had 10cm .73 rear housing with ported iwg. I'm now looking at using it on my 170b l18 set up so will be ditch iwg and rear housing if possibly interested.

This is between a 2860 and 2871 with quick spool due to lighter wheels then garret. Made 290atw 19 psi on an evo 6 full boost at 3200. And if you blow it replacement ehole evo turbos are 150 and you just swap your core.

Thatd be a cheap in the long run 220 kw set up. I built mine for 340 and now has a cheap replacement cost. Or 20g housing and wheels from cowabunga are 220 and a balance is 150....

Also ive got hd springs and had to check valve clearances like a motorbike. When i get the new head built paying shop to do it. As im down 10 psi in one cylinder and i blame wrong clearances lol. Its 165 165 155 165 so not to bad still.
