Hey, just a bit of help, series 2 bluebird stock as a rock manual if i change down a gear and start to accelerate i can hear a pinging noise, but only for a short time and when the car is at low revs, like i am not going slow enough for 1st gear so i stay in second and put the foot down is this just a timing issue ( too advanced ), sounds like the noise is in the exhaust, i have at the moment removed the centre console and am not sure that this is a common thing and just notice it more at the moment i don't hear it when pulling away in first or any other gear change if over 2000 rpm i do get a little small exhaust rumple/back fire when changing down gears but but this sounds just like normal deceleration noises any help would be appreciated thanks norm |

have been spending a lot of time reading all i can in the forums and a lot is said about the fuel causing pinging, have not had the car long and the previous owner said he used 98 + additive, i done the same until last tank were i just used 95 without additive and have read a lot that this is ok for a 84 s2 bluebird as well maybe it's a combination of both timing and fuel just never noticed the pinging before and have never changed the timing for this to start just a little guidance would be helpful |

It can be timing or fuel or both. From your description it is not too bad. A stock L20B with stock timing should be able to run 91 fuel without pinning. If the previous owner has advanced the timing beyond the stock setting, (within reason) you could prevent pinning by using 98 + additive. You should check that the timing is set to factory spec before you jump to any conclusions. |
