well the xmember is perfect as is all of bazs stuff.......but my car isnt perfect.....the xmember is about 5mm big big. or should i say my car is 5mm to small

can i file of abit of the g/box member????

or

try to push up the floor pan to angle it to fit????

or

abit of both

i have tried to jack the xmember up in a attempt to "flex out" the floor
pan. it gets very close but no cigar.....

someone else had this prob a while back.

from what i remember, you have to loosen off the engine mounts as well to make it all slide together - THEN tighten them all up.

ok so the engine xmember?? not just mounts?? by loseing it, it will let the car "relax" back in shape and let me do up the g/box member???

i am just trying to fit up the g/box member without the g/box mounts on it if you know what i mean.....

thanks for that i will give it a whirl tomorrow......and let everyone know how it goes

graham

I have a similar problem bolting in my engine. I have solid engine mounts, so there is no flex to get he mounts lined up easily. I have to have all the bolts "loose" to get them started, and then tighten them bit by bit.......it's a pain in the arse, but a very snug fit.

Graham.

Loose engine mounts this will allow you a greater range of movement at the gearbox end, making it much easier to locate.

Actually Pro240C I think it was Graham with the drama, it turned out he had a broken gearbox mount but prior to us discovering that, he was tryign to fit it I suggested then he loosen engine mounts, locate the gearbox then tighten engine mounts. But in his hurry to fit the motor he must have forgot! :)

Cheers,
Mal

Graham, this is not the first time this has cropped up. others have made the same mistake.
If you have an auto shell the trans Xmember will line up with the 4 rear most holes.
If manual it lines up with the 4 front holes.
After bolting up you can drill and mount up the extra bolts supplied.
Seeing that the front Xmember fitted spot on, i would doubt that your trans tunnel is misshapen.
Fit the rubber trans mount to the bracket, with arrow on bracket to left of car.
Now mount the bracket on to the trans Xmember.
Jackup trans until xmember just touches the body.
Fit bolt to center of the 3 holes right hand side.
Now jack the trans up to the body & fit the left hand bolts.
Note the trans xmember must be snug with the body to line up.
As the trans xmember is tapered it is easy when test mounting to align the member with the wrong holes.
do not confuse the original holes with ones that a previous owner has drilled.
DO NOT force the Xmember hard on to the body, it will fit.
If you still have a prob give me a call.

this shows the transmount in an auto shell without the front bolts fitted.

whilst on the subject here are some pics of a clients car.
His locker(he will never ever use one again on the road) got him in trouble and he shot off a cliff after many many rolls & bashing over rocks etc he landed on the trunk of a tree about 3 meters off the ground & slid down to the ground.
He ripped off a radius rod support, tore a control arm, put the diff through the floor, the trans pushed up into the cabin.
But no damage to the front Xmember,or the chassis rails.
The Xmember just unbolted & was a perfect fit into the new shell.
So the theory of the Xmember bracing the rails is "crash test dummy" proven.
and another good reason not to run a locker on the street
the trans Xmember also survived the trans ending up in the cab.

I don't know that it's fair to blame the locker alone.....it looks as if he was not running enough negative camber to me

There in nothin wrong with Lockers!
The Locker didnt put him over the cliff, his lack of car control did that!!!
Those bloody open wheelers are more unpredictable....

Come on Pro!
I did not say that!

Are you looking for a debate on this.
Fact! floor pan pressings ARE different for autos.
Fact! the mounting positions as quoted are correct.
And re width/height of tunnels.
would you wager on this???
cheers
