I just bought a datto 1600 race car, its got a standard diff welded and i also picked up a 4.6 ratio diff for it. id rather have a LSD then a locker but i cant find anywhere to buy one.
Does anyone know i can get one? or where (if) i can get LSD internals for the 4.6 ratio?

Cheers!

Crashman,

The short version is, yes you can get IRS Datsun LSDs, but you will have to pay a fair bit for an R180 or R200 that will fit (or made to fit) a 1600.

The long version:

R160 LSD - Can't handle high torque loadings. You can get the subaru R160s to fit. Relatively cheap for the subaru and datsun ones. Datsun ones are harder to find than the subaru ones.

R180 LSD - Rare. Can handle higher torques. Relatively expensive but bolt straight in to a 1600.

R200 LSD - Reasonably common. You can still buy brand new I think. Come in Viscous and Mechanical. The best is the rear diff out of the R34 and S15 (but they are a 'short nose' diff I think) but are expensive and require a lot of modifications (modified crossmember, different shafts, rear diff hanger, etc) to fit in a 1600. There are 'long nose' R200 LSDs as well. Harder to get than the short nose but easier to fit (less modifications).

My 180BSSS has the R160 diff

To make it LSD (a proper one) you can go down to Nissan or Subaru and buy the LSD unit for a R160. That easy!

Unfortunately i didn't have that budget, so i found a used LSD out of a 1600. The previous owner had it custom made and paid HEAPS for it. Lucky me. It only had 3.7:1 ratio's so i bolted in the 4.1:1 ratio's out of my 180BSSS.

I've never heard of anyone breaking one of these, even in cars that make 300hp. The secret is to change the oil often.

BUT if you've got a turbo or more than 300hp, i would look at a R200 diff. The trick is getting them under the old Datsun. Still, that hasn't stopped many people. It does cost a bit though, but they'll never break unless you run them out of oil!

Freak,
I broke heaps of R160's with a standard FJ20T. I also broke an R180 clutch pack LSD with 10psi through an otherwise standard FJ20t.
I would not run an R160 with 180hp and expect it to last let alone 300hp.
And none of them where run out of oil.
If it is a race car and regs allow at least go for an R180.
Jake

Welcome to the forum, Crashman.

Actually as it happens I'd be in the market for a 4.6 LSD as well for my Improved Proddie. If you find 2, let us know :). Else it's out with the welder.

There's been a few 1600 Club Cars advertised here and Trading Post of late. Which one did you buy?

Dazda, you mentioned R200 LSD's - I have a 260Z 2+2 with what I think is an R200 - you mention that LSD's can be expensive... I have not started looking around and therefor have no idea of price range, but what do you mena by "expensive"?

As you are in melbourne theres a place in Bayswater called Amex engineering. They make LS centres for Nissan diffs. I think they are about $1200.
The good thing is you can take it in and out of different ratio diffs.

DA510,
It's Amax engineering and they sell Modena Engineering Torsen lsd's to suit R180. Modena do all the manufacturing.
My brother has one in his car and it is good for a road car but personally I did not like the way it torque transfered on the track. You can feel the power transfer from wheel to wheel.

Yes they do transfer torque from one wheel to another, and yes it is a good thing you can feel it cause that gives you control. Some people like it and others don't. Personal preference.

Personally (so I am not disagreeing with anyone!) I like to feel when the tyre is going to let go as then I know I have reached the limit. Anyone else feel the same?

Some LSD's just lock and when you go round a corner, BANG you've lost it. No feel at all. Different strokes for different blokes.

ALSO, they are quoted to about 300+KW at the wheels. Gonna put one in my 16!

I wouldn't mind driving a car with a Torsen. They do seem to be in a lot of the top Improved Production Mazdas...
